OK I am just looking ahead to be organized a bit. On the visajourney guide it says to get SS # as soon as possible then get marriage license. But it goes on to say wait 2 weeks because of some information that will need to be in the system first otherwise it has to be done manually which apparently is a more difficult process. Then another 2 weeks to get the SS card. So would that mean 4 weeks minimum to get marriage license by following that info?

I have also read some people say that got married first and then went to get SS # and card after they were married.

Is there a procedure that needs to be followed? Many things seem a bit vague on the government website.

Does the process vary by SS office too?

Thanks!

My wife and I were married first (in California) and got the certified marriage license and took it to the SS office a few weeks later where we live(Arizona) to get a SS# for tax purposes. She got the actual social security card a few weeks later with black letters over the card that said it wasn't valid for employment until approved by Homeland Security. We went through the immigration process and got the advanced parole and temporary work (combo card) from USCIS. A few weeks later we had our interview and approval from USCIS and got the actual green card. We then went back to SS office and got a new social security card with no conditions.

SSA is federal, the process is the same (of course there are idiots in some offices that don't have a clue)

My wife did not apply for the SSN until after we were married (month after arriving in the USA), then we took the marriage certificate and the SS-5 form to SSA and got her card in her married name.

Ya know - I'm gonna follow you - each time you write this stuff.

Why? It's #######. You're giving false hope to folk , leading them to believe that what worked for your wife will work for all.

It's not that way, at all.

You got exceptionally lucky. USUALLY, when folk apply in the married name (K-1 visa holders) within the 90 days on the I-94, a properly trained SSA staffer will send the stuff out for DHS Verification.

That was skipped, with you and yer wife.

I hope you realize how exceptionally lucky you were. I also hope that you stop repeating 'your story' as the gospel.

It's not the gospel. It doesn't work (mostly). You and your wife were exceptionally lucky, IMO bullying a SSA staffer to make it happen without the SAVE db lookup.

I ask you stop repeating your story, as it's not the way it's supposed to be done at any SSA office.

Thanks in advance !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Define "STUFF" !!

And then in your infinite wisdom... explain what information was the SSA personal pulling up on their computer when they "verified" information before authorizing issuance of the SSN for my wife.

And are you saying there is no "STUFF" sent out if a person applies for their SSN in the single name?
