Passport Delimma

So I recently started a new job (this week), and my oath is on the 12th of June (I am going into work late that day), they allowed me to take vacation for 2 weeks next month(was planned way in advanced). Long story short I do not want to ask for any more time off to apply for my passport because I work during the hrs of operation of the passport office, so I cant apply for it after work, neither can I apply for it during my lunch break because it takes a while to get there.

So my question is should I apply for my passport at my oath, and if I do will I get it back on time? I am travelling on July 8th.

If I were you, I would apply at the New York Passport Agency. You must be travelling within two weeks, so you can wait till then.

By expediting the processing, you'll get it sooner than if you applied under normal processing (like at the oath ceremony, or US post office).

My wife picked up her passport after 2 business days. We expedited hers.

IMHO consider going from straight to the passport agency from the ceremony and be done with it.

On another subject, check with your HR manager if you actually need to take time off for the ceremony. Some companies will allow you to take the time for these events without clocking them as 'time off'.

Yea that looks like my only option as of now. But I won't be able to expedite it because I won't be travelling within 14days from June 12th, its more like 23 days.

The next best option would be to apply at your nearest post office...perhaps during your lunch break?

You can pay the expedited processing fee. At least there is no 2 week restriction when applying at the post office.

You will definitely receive your passport sooner than normal processing.

When I applied for my passport before my first international trip to meet my fiancee's family, I ordered my passport 3 months before my trip and paid the expedite fee at the post office ($60) and had my passport in about 2 weeks.

EDIT TO ADD: I want to reiterate the importance of reading the criteria of what to bring with you when you apply. I don't know how many times I've been at the post office and seen people turned away from the passport line because they didn't bring what they needed. You can find all that information on the state department by searching the proper pages regarding 1st time applicants.

We applied for my daughters passport at the post office, paid $60 extra and had it in the mailbox after 8 days.

Husband applied at the post office, and had his passport in just under 9 days. As noted, make sure that you have everything required including three or four personal cheques. Our office required two separate payments, and you never know if you might make an accident on them.

Here's a few pointers to check:

-Passport hours at post offices vary, most of them are open M-F 10am-3pm. Some require appointments some do not. Some are open on Saturdays.

-Passport Agency opens as early as 7:30am. Can you ask your new employer if you can be 2-3 hrs late? Or can you work half day in the morning and take the afternoon off to get it?

-If you decide to expedite through post office, pay $12.85 extra for expedited overnight shipping.
