Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on Tuesday addressing the issue of sexual assaults within the military, suggested that the “hormone level created by nature” was to blame for rapes in the military. He also suggested that all pregnant servicewomen should be investigated to make sure their condition was the result of consensual sex.

Chambliss noted, “several years ago when we had the first females go out on an aircraft carrier, when they returned to port, a significant percentage of those females were pregnant.”

He asked Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Jonathan Greenert, “Was any investigation made by the Navy following that incident to determine whether or not all of those pregnancies occurred as a result of consensual acts?”

The admiral replied that he did not have details of the incident immediately available, but he did promise to follow up.

Chambliss went on to say, “The young folks coming in to each of your services are anywhere from 17 to 22 or 23. Gee-whiz, the hormone level created by nature sets in place the possibility for these types of things to occur. So, we’ve got to be very careful on our side.”

The Georgia Republican points out that it is imperative to be more proactive when it pertains to background checks for sexual assault and said, “Guys, we’re not doing our jobs. You’re not doing yours and we’re not doing ours with the rates that we are seeing on sexual assaults, as I said to start with, you recognize it. We recognize it, and we got to figure this thing out because we simply can’t tolerate it.”

He added that the Pentagon’s decision to allow women in combat roles was only going to make the problem worse and noted that Democratic proposals to modify the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) and reporting sexual assault outside of the victim’s chain of command may not work because young servicemen were being driven by their “nature.”

How's that "there's no Republican War on Women" thing going for you, GOP? Way to misunderstand the nature of rape AND manage to be the worst sort of condescending, mansplaining douche who believes he is speaking for the "protection" of women.

This puts the Nature Boy's oddities into proper perspective. It's not their fault, they're just from Georgia.

Introducing more and more women is no doubt going to lead to more consensual/non-consensual relationships and therefore pregnancies/assault claims. Now this is true, I think the disconnect for the GOP is seeing this as directly weakening our military force. They're right but only if this happens in an uncontrolled environment. Now here's what they don't get. This can be controlled by good leaders and regulations. I don't think you get to say, look they're ruining the reputation of the military if you don't have strict guidelines for men and women working together and then of course strict consequences for those that choose not to follow strict guidelines.

I would imagine similar discussions happened when women began to integrate into the private workforce and that was a big success. Granted, there are still hurdles for women to overcome, I think the progress speaks for itself.

More women, more gays in the military. Soon it will be another bastion of lazy pot smoking peace loving perverts living off the government dole.

Rape is NOT a natural consequence of hormones or of having men and women serving together in the military. Rather it is, and always has been, a crime of violence directed against women (and, occasionally, men). For a military to function at its best you must have, before anything else, strict discipline. Having significant occurrence rates of crimes like rape speaks to a real problem with lack of even the most basic level of discipline. No matter what hormones or psychological hostilities a soldier might bring with him when he joins up, he must get adequate discipline in his training so that he will not disobey orders in combat. If he cannot even control himself in mixed company how could other members of his unit count on him when under fire? It seems to me any military member committing any such crime is manifestly unfit to wear the uniform and should get dishonorable discharge along with appropriate incarceration time. Our military needs to have the respect and trust of our citizens and the citizens of whatever country they must deploy to. How can this be possible when we hear so often of such things occurring? It is long past time for commanders to hold accountable those under them and for their superiors to do the same!

I attribute it to the moral decay prevalent since the mid-60s. Many of the male soldiers come from dysfunctional family units and have no inkling of appropriate behavior.

Now, there are psych-tests that can be given prior to induction, to weed out the possible rapists, you betcha - but when are they gonna use that stuff for reals?

Thus once again proving the genius of the GOP.

Now I can understand how their members are so easily manipulated.

A a party for the less evolved. :)

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

Again. When you say stuff like this, many will be inclined to not take you too seriously.
