Question regarding my wife's certified birth certificate.

She was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, China. She has listed that on her US visa application the last two years, so that is the city of birth the US government has on file for her.

Now we have a certified copy of her birth certificate for immigration purposes, this was certified by the local government in Nanjing, China.

It states in the translation that her city of birth is Xishan, Jiangsu Province. I asked her about this and she says now there is no Xishan City, over the past 30 years that is no longer a city but now just a district (still within Wuxi).

I thought I would list her city of birth as Wuxi as she has always done, then add an attachment to the packet explaining this. I just didn't think it was best to now use what was in the translation as it could create a bigger mess.

Any advice on how this should be handled?

Use exactly what's in the translation, instead.

And write a letter of attestation (signed by her)

that clearly outlines the discrepancy.

Why? She's not getting back to the notary office anytime soon to change it.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Should we attach the letter of attestation to both forms I-130 and I-485? Or just attach one to the entire packet?

Also we only have two certified copies of the marriage and her birth certificate. Should we use one original for for the I-130 and one original for the I-485 and keep copies for myself? Or should we give USCIS copies and keep the originals and bring to the interview?

I-130 - photocopies of civil documents.

I-485 - originals and photocopies of civil documents. when at the interview, ask for originals back.

Hi Darnell,

Do you think the letter of attestation should be notarized?
