Got a problem with the legal definition of "child"? It's a person under the age of majority which in this country woukld be 18. Trayvon Martin was under 18 and thus a child when George Zimmermann snuffed his life out.

I don't think adult. Given a choice between the two, child is more descriptive, although teenagers seem to be a species of their own at times. Teens have all the functional adult parts, just not quite as developed as expected for an adult, especially the judgement part, which is why they can't enter into a binding contract.

I guess when I think of a child, I think of some kid riding around on a tricycle or something like that. Not a 17 year old that is 6 foot tall and 160 lbs.

Sorry someone wasn't speaking in legal terms (where I believe a child is under 14) but for a regular person to call him a child isn't really incorrect either.
