Anyone paying attention to what's happening in Turkey? There's an uprising going on and a crack down on that uprising. I've read some reports saying that it's comparable to what happened in Iran in the summer of 2009.

There was a media blackout and just now the story is getting out. I first came across the news a few days ago when I was watching videos on youtube about Egypt. There was a video posted by the Anonymous group's branch called "Operation Egypt" that helped in the Egyptian uprising. Here's my thread on it: LINK

This video on facebook was posted yesterday. LINK TO VIDEO There is a force being used and they've made a medical point to help with over 500 protester injuries.

Here is what the guy is saying in the video.

TODAY’S SUMMARY FOR A DOCTOR:
“Guys, we are not at med school. We are not at a hospital. We have three equipment in our hands. Pain killers, deltolin [sic?], bandaid/gauze. To those who are short of breath, give deltolin. Painkillers to those in pain. Tend to the ones that require sutures. There are orthopedists here. Direct them and trauma victims to the center. Carry those that are short of breath together with the deltolin. Those with limited knowledge or those that are still in school. Interns, generalists will be gathered towards the right. Otherwise, we are creating chaos here and nothing else. You are excited and you want to help. But emergency treatment does not work like this. Especially in a mosque.. People with breathing problems this way, deltolin and the trauma victims under the lights. Wrap the wounds, stitch them up, provide pain killers. You cannot do anything else. Measuring blood pressure will not do any good. Listening to their breathing at length will not work, you cannot put a breathing tube, you cannot operate. This is a mosque. Do what is necessary and we will guide you. Other than that you are creating chaos. Stay calm and try to maintain 3-4 doctors by the patients. If you are not sure about something, seek guidance. Direct the patients to where they should go . There is nothing else you can do."

There was a media blackout? If there was, it failed. This has been all over the European news for a number of days now. I think it first got hot in Istanbul on Thursday or Friday last week. This all started as a protest of environmentalists against a project planned in a park in Istanbul - Taksim Square. But it got bigger fast over the last several days as the government overreacted to those initial protests. Erdogan has since made nothing but mistakes handling this. Be that as it may, it's not quite like Iran. Might have something to do with Turkey's government being not quite like Iran's.

Yeah the protesters were claiming there was a media blackout and this gained the attention of "Anonymous" the online hacktavists. My friends in Turkey say it's turned into a situation where they don't want the current government using religion for politics. That's not unlike what happened in Iran's 2009 green movement. However, I think what the analysts intentions are in comparing the Turkish protests to the Iranian protests doesn't have as much to do with comparing the governments as it does with the "size" and "capability" of the movement. Neither of the protests in Turkey or Iran seem to have captured the entire country like with what we've seen in the countries affected by the Arab Spring. The protests are rather in a pocket or one location.

This is true, Erdogan appears to have insulted Ataturk calling him a drunk. And he has mobilized the secularists against him by wanting to turn the country towards God. There aren't too many of those outside of Istanbul, I'd suspect, which would explain why the protests appear to be concentrated in that city. It's sad to see, really, after Turkey has made so much progress over the last decade. Beautiful place with great people.

I would love to see Turkey someday and I hope these current protests aren't as big a deal as the Arab spring because of the instability that has brought the other countries in the region.

Ironically I recall that during the Iranian green movement in the summer of 2009 many of the dissidents eventually fled to exile in Turkey. The border was considered the most accessible and they thought they would be the safest in Turkey. I wonder how that's turning out for them now.
