My rationale was that in signing the I-864 for their son to get his greencard, their daughter-in-law put her assets on the line for the duration of the affidavit. It would stand to reason their son to feel the same way towards his wife.

The affidavit of support is not eternal. And even if it was, his parents are money-savvy, they don't have any obligation to reciprocate anything.

Couldn't say. I never met them. My opinion is based on this limited exchange.

It may not be a red flag but depending on which state they reside it does not matter who purchases the home if it is a community property state she will get half regardless of who inherits what, my husband was in his country when I purchased our home and in the state of Texas I could finance the home and he still had to be on the deed. I still needed a power of attorney to close with his name on the deed. A good friend of mine bought her house in her name only, in Washington State which at the time was not a community property state for marriage but at the time of the divorce her ex requested half of the profits of the home and it was granted. Anything bought during a marriage can be contested.

Good luck,

Good luck,

I suggest that you become familiar with property ownership and division especially in a community state.

Your thinking is flawed and you'll be eaten alive by any 1st year divorce Lawyer with that line of thinking.

If his parents afford that, I am sure he could have bought a much nicer house wherever he is from. Not everyone is from Africa or the poor parts of Asia, you know, some of us had quite nice lives back home.

Ignorance of epic proportions.

But according to you, you'll never be a "genuine" american so why go through all the stress when your spouse could have just joined you and your nice life back home? huh.png

No one is eating anyone alive here you see my affairs are in order therefore I do not need a lawyer. My response was to the original poster in which case still stands true, depending on what the laws in her state dictate that is what whe has to prepare for, I have seen both instances so yes to her I suggest "she must do her homework." Anything purchased or acquired during a marriage can be contested, I never said it would be granted.

Much love,

Who says we havent or that we wont, 5 years from now? And what's that got to do with the price of tea in China?

Will anyone become a genuine american? Why would they want to lose their identity, and not just add to it? Would you appreciate someone so anxious to put their identity, live, culture and language behind? I genuinely have no respect for those who jump ship so easily.

You clearly have not...you've been in a relationship with the US immigration system close to 2 years and have a minimum of 3 years to go. That has nothing to do with the price of tea in China and I am not interesting in buying tea from China so that works just fine.

Anyone who solemnly took the oath of allegiance becomes a genuine american...but you wouldn't know that now, would you?

If you looked around, you'll very clearly see that the identity, lives, culture and language of immigrants typically follow them to their adopted country (USA) and that doesn't make them any less "genuine" than any other american...even your spouse.

Yes, because all I need to become a "genuine" American is an oath, right.

I disagree - immigrants will never ever be fully integrated, certainly never be as American as people born and raised here. Who claims they are is either a liar, a very very superficial person, or severely deluded. For the average immigrant, there will always be just one real home - why do you think so many decide to get buried in their initial countries?

At best you can say you will never be fully integrated and that you, personally, will never be a genuine American. Your loss, really.

It is ludicrous for you to presume to apply that to others, for you can only define what being an American is at a very personal level. You can't do that for others. Each individual that comes to this country has a particular and oftentimes unique concept as do those who are born here. Being an American is represented by a set of ideals; not a laundry list.
