I'll be moving to the US to study for two years (got a F-1 visa) and I've some prescribed medication I'll need to bring along with me. The pharmacy in my home country won't give me more than for a year of consumption, so I'll have to go back next year. My question though is if I'm allowed to bring a whole year of consumption of prescribed medication? Or are you only allowed to bring medication for 60 days? All help much appreciated!

Thank you all for your answers!

What might happen if I bring to much medication, will I go down with some kind of smuggling or will they just throw it away?

How do I know if the meds are approved by FDA? And how can I get an american doctor to prescribe the medication for me? I'm soon gonna get doctor's letter from my doctor explaining in english that I need my meds, is that enough? Or do I need a recipe as well?

One of the medications I use by the way is Citalopram, which is an anti-depressant medicine I use to prevent stomach pains since I have IBS. May it become an issue now, or later, that I use an anti-depressant?

Chances are they would never check and if they do they would either tell you the rule and let you go or confiscate the pills over 90. Here is the link to check if the drug is approved by the FDA

http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cder/drugsatfda/

Remember drugs have different names in different countries. You said you are coming to study most Universities have a student health center you can go to and they can help or most cities have Medical Clinics you can go to and pay for a visit to get a prescription.

Citaprolam is approved by the FDA. You could also bring a 90 days supply and ship yourself the other 270 pills in 3 shipments of 90 each before you leave. That technically satisfies the 90 pills rule per import.
