Winnipeg Medical Experience & a question

I went for my medical today... Went to Dr. Drexler's office in Winnipeg. Tons of paperwork, chest x-ray, more paperwork, 2 vials of blood drawn, more paperwork, and then the exam. Dr. Drexler is a nice guy, he has a good sense of humor. It was a full exam, had to strip down and put one of those stupid paper gowns on. Nothing "abnormal" though.

I do have one question.. The head nurse kept telling me that I was supposed to have my appointment letter in-hand at the time of the medical... I didn't think this was the case. I thought I just had to have my Vancouver case number. Can anyone clarify this for me? She said it was because hte medical is only good for 6 months and they were supposed to confirm that I actually had an appointment.

From what I've heard, it just depends on the doctors office whether they want the letter or not - it's not something the embassy requires. Also, I've heard that the medical is good for one year, but hopefully someone else knows better, and hopefully you won't be waiting that long! :)

Yeah I guess it varies place by place. I assumed I didn't need the letter because Packet 3 Requests a medical on the checklist... etc. It's a technicality... they still did the exam once I provided my case number, but they weren't really happy about it.

Yep, all depends on DR.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I think on the K3 checklist it asked whether you'd *scheduled* the medical, not whether it had been completed. Not sure about the K1 checklist though.

Thanks for the info on the Winnipeg dr. I wil be booking my medical soon and was wondering which Dr. I'll be sure to take my interview letter.

What was the cost for the medical with Dr Drexler?

I would highly recommend him. He fills everything out properly, but at the same time doesn't take it -too- seriously. We both had a giggle when he had to ask if I have leprosy.

It was $175 for everything. I believe the other Dr. in Winnipeg charges $192.00

Like I said it is a full exam, he did a breast exam and had a peek down below. He tells you he can bring a nurse in if you want for this part. I didn't bother, and he was very fast about it.

Afterwards he showed me the questions and said "See? It's basically because they want to know you're really a girl." After the exam he said "Congratulations, now you are an American."

I laughed REALLY hard at that one. If ONLY...

The nurses are the ones who were picky about the letter. The head nurse was pretty cranky, but oh well.

Post again or PM me if you want any more info :)

I had my medical with Drexler back in September. I did not have my Packet 4 interview appointment letter (I actually got it the day of, after my medical). I did however bring Packet 3 along with me. The head nurse was actually nice then (maybe she was just having a bad day?).

Goodluck with the rest of process. And don't worry about bringing your x-ray to the interview -- they don't ask for it. I brought it with me to Vancouver but left it in the hotel room, just in case. Oh, and double check that the nurse gives you a copy of the Vaccination Worksheet -- you'll need it to apply for AOS.

No prob, bob. Feel free to PM if you have any more questions/concerns!

P.S. If you need a hotel room for your stay in Vancouver, Days Inn Downtown is 1 block away from the Consulate... it's relatively cheaper than the other downtown hotels, and they'll hold all your bags for you at no cost while you're at your interview.

Wow, you're full of helpful little tidbits :P

I was just talking to my mom last night who lives in Victoria and wants to come over for the interview (she knows she can't come in with me, but she's there for moral support :D ) and we were kind of looking at hotels and wondering which would be good. I'll probably end up with that one lol. Thanks!
