Wasnt sure where to post this , but since hes in on K-1 thought I would post it hear. So I called the Social Security office as we had planned to go down to the office to get his SS number. I was told he could not get a SS card due to the fact he cannot work. I said we need this inorder to open up a joint bank account as the bank requires a ss number before the account can be open . How are we suppose to meet the requirements when we AOS if we cant even obtain a number (joint bank account ect. ) ?

don't pay attention to anyone on the phone.

K-1 visa holders with valid I-94s are legally able to get a SSN.

Most folk that work for the SSA are stupid, not well trained, and don't give a sh|t about their job, and make stuff up all the time.

Have a read, twice.. http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/405546-ssn-howto/

Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

They should be able to get your fiance a SSN on his K-1 only. Consider going to the SSO in person. If they still refuse to issue him a SSN, get him a ITIN instead. You can do it at the SSO. The ITIN is a SSN-like number he can use as he would a SS until he gets his SS card.

Good luck!

Hopefully the system has him in , You now have to go to a web-sight to print off a copy of the I-94. He came in on the 18th correct. Thanks all of you guys for the help. I also saw that I accidentally double posted . Sorry about that .

I wrote out a very detailed thing on how to get a SSN for somebody who has difficulty understanding the guides. It explains how you handle an uninformed worker that a K1 is "legal alien allowed to work" and eligible for a SSN based on the class of admission. If you want to read it, go here http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/428857-my-full-story/?p=6258653
