It makes no difference which country the foreign spouse is from. The process is the same, read the guides, its all there. Processing time is 9-12 months without any bumps.

Moved from spousal visa forums to regional forums as the OP is requesting country specific information for the process.

Ok, thanks everyone!

I just don't want to make ANY mistakes (won't be using a lawyer).

Also...

With this type of visa.....how long can you travel back/forth until you MUST stay in the U.S.????

I've heard up to 2 years....as long as you leave every 6 months. (We currently are married (6 mo. married & over 5 years together) and live in the Dominican Republic.)

If you file for a re-entry permit you can stay outside the country for a year or two before having to come back. Check out the re-entry permit information I-131 form on USCIS website.

Also note - the longer you spend out of the country the longer it will take for him to become a US citizen and not need any green card or permits or junk.

True.

So most people have experienced 9-12 months for the processing?

How soon do you need the re-entry pass? The first time you leave the US and then come back?

If he needs to leave the USA ( after entering and getting the green card ) for more than 6 months he should apply for the re-entry permit asap before traveling as it will take some time to process it and get it in the mail. If he will travel and come back 6 months and under he would not need the re-entry permit just the green card and his passport.

So, you're saying as long as he goes back and forth from the U.S. every 6 months or less (3 months, 4 months...), he'll be able to do this forever? I don't think so....

The OP sound like she is living aboard, and will be doing DCF, therefore the process can be much shoter then 9-12 months.

the OP's type of visa is a DCF which is a much shorter time frame. i havent seen too many of those here on VJ since not alot of us live in the dr. do search on here for those who have and try to contact them via inbox and find out their process. go through the DR members' profiles and check who has filed through a DCF visa! you can also check the consulate's website and read about the DCF.

Good luck to your and your hubby :)

Not forever no but for a good amount of time yes. At some point the CBP will catch on and stop him for abusing the system because you are meant to be living in the USA not in another country when you have a GC. Which is why I said the more time he spends outside the long it takes to become a US citizen and not need all this stuff.

He needs to make sure he maintains his status and renews his card before it expires etc. Using the re-entry permit is safer when traveling but it is not needed if you travel for short periods of time.

Sorry but you are quoting the wrong person I never once said it would take 9-12 months. I commented about the re-entry permit and traveling while having a green card.

OP? DCF?

I hate acronyms...

I live in the Dominican January to May, August to December.

I live in Washington, June to July and at Christmas.

He lives here.

So................what type of Visa are we going for?

I've been told that I should use my parents' address for all mailing purposes...........
