She doesn't have to bring much if you send most of it with the I-130, more with the DS-230 and then brings a little more to the interview, but do not count on anything being looked into at the interview. Sometimes they look, sometimes they don't.

Thanks for all the replies guys! One more question. She currently does not have a passport as she does not travel outside of Vietnam ever. From reading the guides, I believe I need a copy of her biographical page of her passport, or am I completely off on this? Should she get a passport sooner than rather, regardless?

thanks!

Yes she will need a passport when you go to NVC and you send in the documents with the DS-230 you will need that biographical page yes. So sooner than later.

And to answer your question it is wise to make 3 copies of your petition package you send to USCIS. One for your wife and one in case your original petition ever gets lost.

Also do not send originals to USCIS copies are fine.

Hey - Yeah, sorry I'm talking about the I-130. From what I know my wife will need to bring a packet of all evidence to proof it's a bonafide relationship to her interview right? Are these the same evidences that I send in along with the application?

Thanks.

The evidence pile starts with the I-130 submittal.

Then time passes. you generate more evidence as the time passes

when the DS-230 is sent in to NVC - if'n you submit MORE evidence (since time passed) then it'll get reviewed by HCMC IV unit before interview day (which, for some, is a blessing).

More time passes after DS-230 submittal, so is more evidence to generate and

ultimately on interview day - (or the day before) you can stop generating the evidence - and show all on interview day.

It's really up to you, what to do - the 6 types of evidence are listed in the I-130 instructions, so submit all that you have, already.

Go Get Em, and Good Luck !

It's not required for the I-130

but

a copy of the BIO page of the passport is required with the DS-230, Immigrant Visa Application, submitted into NVC after I-130 approval.

So , she has some time. Not much, but enough to get a passport without worrying about expedite fees.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Regarding names and name changes, the custom in Vietnam is for the woman to keep her married name. My wife will change her name but not until she gets to the US. We are doing this for practical reasons (not the least of which it would require us to change a bunch of documents, both in VN as well as visa-related).

This seems like the best approach in Vietnam, but maybe not elsewhere. At a minimum keeping her maiden name until she leaves VN will prevent having to get a new ID card, updates to the household book (maybe, not sure), etc. I'd rather go thru the pain of changing her green card when she is here versus having to change a bunch of documents now.
