ok so here is the entire story.. I've been married to my Marine husband for 2 years now. I married my husband because i loved him not for his ssn so i didnt really care to start the paperwork to get my status fixed. I moved in with him 8 months ago and tried to get enrolled to DEERS but was told I needed a ssn. I went to an attorney but I dont have 5000 to spend on getting my status fixed (military underpays) and since i dont have a ssn i cant get a job. now i am 7 months pregnant and have hardly had any prenatal care and arent qualified for medicaid because i have no ssn... cray5ol.gif i have an ITIN and a Mexican matricula (form of i.d.) but they are saying I need a passport. I called to make an appointment to get my passport but the mexican consulate doesnt have appointments until October!! what can I do ? can I use my mexican matricula as a form of I.D. or what please help I called on base and the DEERS office but they both keep saying the same thing. I either need a ssn or a state I.d. and the people I talk to are so beyond rude its embarrassing to go and talk to them they degrade me so much.. I've been here since I was 2 years old but money is a huge issue

In that case....Suck it up and spend the money to adjust your status. This problem will never go away and will only get harder. I understand money is tight BUT it will be worse the longer you put it off. With him being in the Marines, he can get a loan for the application fees.

EDIT: You don't need a lawyer. Follow the guides on this site!

you don't need social for DEERS just an A number which should be assigned and listed on your first 797 as soon as you apply for 485 which you should get about 2 weeks after you file.

What I do not know is if you are able to file given how you entered the US.

Check with.....

P.S. My son was a Marine and did his SOI in Jacksonville before joining the fleet on west coast. you may need to push your husband some as the enlisted don't want to make waves and throw out the "you don't understand" thing a lot. It is often left to the wife to drive for the services that are entitled.

Hi Crystalb59!

You have a tough situation with immigration, which you will eventually be able to fix in time. Right now, though, don't stress too much about it and remember that your health and your baby's wellbeing have to be you're number one priority! Paperwork might have to wait, but babies don't like to wait (to be born or for anything else!). For prenatal care, you could try:

http://www.co.cumberland.nc.us/health/services/maternity_clinic.aspx

433-3600, ext. 1, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m

It does not matter if you don't have the "right" papers and you pay on a sliding scale (what you can afford based on your husband's earnings, which might be as little as nothing).

As for the Mexican consulate in Raleigh, try calling them back and hopefully you will get a more understanding person on the phone and explain your situation to them, that you need to get your passport urgently because you're pregnant and you're husband is in the military and you need it for certain documents before the birth. I am from NC and my husband is from Mexico and I have been in that consulate before and everyone there seems to be applying for the passport. They don't seem mean, just very busy. Try them again.

Nobody should talk to you in a rude or degrading way, but even if they do, stay calm and keep after them until you get the care you and your baby need now!

Then, after you have everything of the pregnancy/birth organized, you can think about your papers.

Buena suerte.

I know other people have said it, but you do not need a SSN, a A number, or even a state ID. My wife got registered in Deers with only our marriage certificate and her Panama passport. The people working at the office you went to are not good at their jobs. Have you asked to talk to a supervisor? Keep pressing them, because they are wrong.

Hi, I'm a Captain in the Air Force and my wife is in the Philippines. I had no problems adding my wife and two children to DEERS without a social security number. I'm currently stationed at an Army post, and I had the supervisor at the ID card office take care of the paperwork. My wife was even able to pick up her dependent military ID at the US Embassy in Manila. Where are you stationed? Feel free to PM me and maybe I can help or point you in the right direction.

You need to get into DEERS asap since you're pregnant. The mililitary finance shop will back pay you the BAH difference for the past 2 years once you're uploaded in DEERS. The 2 years of backpay will help!

I picked up some forms at the local JAG office for military folks needing pro bono (Free) civilian immigration attorney assistance. PM me and I'll send you the forms.
