Thanks for making my point. Not sure if you realize, but the government borrows money against your future social security payments. It's been proven again and again that government can not manage finances. Now you want to turn another segment of the economy over to them?

Maybe if they showed some kind of fiscal responsibility, I might be all for it. However the 15+ trillion debt we have says otherwise.

how isn't it voluntary? i can deal drugs and never pay a dime into fica. or i can work under the table babysitting or prostituting butt sex while eating filet mignon.

If we had the FAIR TAX you could not do any of that without paying tax.

And the IRS would have no power to issue exemptions, hence no scandals and the Treasury Secretary could not underpay his taxes and the USA would be the world's tax haven for employers.

Hasn't our convoluted tax system been the source of enough scandal that you want to change it?

That 15% or so you and your employer pays doesn't sit waiting in an account for you, it is paid out right away to society's leeches, like old people and those feigning injury. If they don't suck up all your money, and anything is left, it is "loaned" to even bigger leeches, to fight wars, or lame green projects run by major donors that helped finance the President's election and reelection. If and when you ever decide to feign injury, or become old yourself, some other poor hard working sap and his boss, along with four or five others, will be providing you with 15.3% of their pay.

FAIR TAX eliminates all that also. No payroll tax deductions, no income tax deductions. If you make $10 per hour and work 40 hours in a week, your paycheck will be $400.

Illegal aliens, prostitutes, drug dealers, waitresses, babysitters, people doing tradeswork for cash, even foreign visitors, will all pay tax when they SPEND the money they earn. Each person will receive a monthly rebate direct deposited to their account equal to the tax on basic necessities. Resale items and used items are exempt, so a poor person could actually avoid paying tax by choosing to buy used merchandise and basic necessities. A rich person will get the same rebate as a poor person.

No tax returns, no exemptions, no deductions, never a question about how much you make or how you make it.

It takes the politics out of the tax system. No more "the rich will pay for this". Everyone pays. Raise tax rates? Sure. Raise them on everyone. Business would pay no tax (they don't anyway, they just pass it on) and there could be no "corporate welfare", or tax subsidies for anyone

Imagine a business pays no tax and has the infrastructure, resources and transportation system of the USA at its doorstep...where would you build YOUR factory?

You're not getting penny for penny what you've paid into it. Where did you get that idea? It's original purpose was to be there for people who need it. What you're describing is an entitlement, which is exactly the way modern Republicans regard it as, but that was not the intent. It was never an investment either - that's why it's called insurance. You are essentially paying for insurance that if you become disabled and can no longer work, you'll get monthly checks.

Also, many Americans get tax refunds for amounts larger than what they paid into it, through the EITC. But before that gets goat, realize that many corporations have been paying zero taxes and sometimes are being paid by the government as an 'incentive' to provide jobs.

You're all over the place. I was talking about Social Security aspect , not disability. But, since you brought it up, I find it odd that the percentage of people below retirement age receiving disability has almost doubled in 20 years.

The EITC is another one.. Another government reward for irresponsible behavior.

See here's the thing about you. You have a problem with corporations getting tax breaks, EXCEPT when it's for one of your favorite save the environment projects. Corporations are evil unless they do something that YOU consider beneficial.

Get them ALL out of our lives as much as possible! People who want the "government" more involved with our lives (is Steven listening?) have to accept that these are the people who will be controlling a larger part of your life.

How can anyone look at this stuff and look at the daily monkeyshines in Washington DC and say "Oh, yeah, I want those guys to handle my healthcare, they will do it much better than I can!"

Yet oddly enough, Steven (and others) wants more government involvement in our lives and also posts article after article citing government incompetence.

MEDICARE, that government administered health insurance program for everyone over 65, consistently recieves far higher customer satisfaction scores in surveys than any private insurance company. I will gladly sign up in several years and I am betting you will too. Which means that I, and you too Gary, will be saying "Yes, I DO want those government guys handling my health-care insurance!"

And that, while not perfect, our economy has been an engine of productivity greater than any the world had ever seen before? And that our economy has been more stable than most over the life of our country? Why do you hate our country so much? If you dislike it here so much why have you not moved somewhere you would have more freedom from any central government power over your life. I hear Somalia lets 'entrepreneuers' a lot of flexibility to manage their affairs!

I believe the truest patriot is the one who, while loyal to and believing in his country, always seeks to see it become even better. So I applaud your questioning of policies. I am disappointed, though, when I see such negative blanket statements especially when they are inaccurate.

I assume the blanket statement you are referring to is about the govt. not being able to manage it's own finances. Not sure. I'd say the 15 trillion dollar debt speaks for itself. Are you saying we don't have a 15 trillion debt?
