For those that drove uhauls, did you pick up in canada and drop off in US?

That is allowed?

We planned to bring my step dad up with us, have him rent a truck in blue water, MI, cross the border with it, get our stuff, then drive back and drop truck off in IL.

But if I can actually rent locally and drop off in US, WAY better! saves me 4 hours of gas.

Yeah I just looked at it. 3 day rental over FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS HOLY #######.

That is NOT worth it.

We were trying to save money by not using my mom's pickup and trailer.

Yes you can rent locally and drop it off in the USA. I have my booked from here to drop off in Colorado. Just over a grand for rental plus gas.

Yeah, that's ridiculous. I just shipped a 1500lb crate 48x103x50"h from vancouver to the US for 800 dollars including customs clearance.

I'd rather have my stuff shipped lmao

Prolly a pro rate because to ship my husband's telescope from Red Deer to Colorado was going to cost me $150. 25lbs... A uhaul pod thing was 2k. other companies did want to base it on weight but i have a twin foam mattress bed, a bbq grill, crystal, and a bunch of other heavy stuff. Nothing I'm taking is light and easy. LOL At least I'm not hauling the queen bed down there!

that's what i said. Pro rate. Not prorated. Two different things. Companies that ship a lot, tend to get better deals because that's what they do vs the general consumer. Pro as in professional. smile.png

pro rate also means prorated.

Which means I'm getting a discount because i'm using a small portion of a full truck that other people are also paying for.

Which both of them applied to what you said lmao

Yes, it is a professional trucking company.

I mean, sure I'm getting a discount because they 'hope' I'm going to be on a truck with other people, but if I'm not, I get to pay the same.

That's the chance to take in this business. MUHAHAHAHAHA

Anyways, I'll probably beg my step dad to drive up with his pickup and trailer.

I'd rather fork over $350 in gas instead.

Some of the smaller local moving companies are affiliated with the larger international movers. I know that when I moved, I used a 'local' company that picked up in their regular van, drove my belongings to a central location (Toronto, I believe) for storage for a few days, then loaded my stuff on to an International carrier (I don't remember which one now - it was 9 years ago but I think it was United Van Lines). My stuff took up a third of their big trailers and they had loads for 2 other people on the same trailer. They loaded them all at their storage facility so that the load for north Atlanta which was unloaded first was put in last, mine was in the middle and unloaded 2nd so loaded second, and the third load which was headed to Savannah was loaded first as it would be unloaded third. So, you may still want to check with your local movers who may have an affiliation with the larger movers. The more accurately you can determine the weight and present an accurate measure of volume, the more accurate your quote will be, but do allow for a 10% variance as they will get a true weight after the truck is loaded.

I had a one bedroom apartment to move with lots and lots of books! They determine the price based upon weight and volume times distance plus gas surcharge and if they have to go up and down steps to load/unload. My belongings arrived in perfect shape exactly one week after I did, as I had to fax back my approved K-1 visa and my I-94 to the moving company before they would load.

Great info! Thanks for the tip :)

I picked up the truck in Vancouver, the car towing dolly in Blaine, WA, and dropped the pair of them off in Naperville, IL. It was immeasurably cheaper to get the towing dolly in Blaine. The difference in price between Blaine and Vancouver was minimal and I didn't want to fuss with crossing the border twice.

You can do cross-border drop off, just make sure you price out if it's cheaper in Sarnia (I'm assuming your location, given Blue Water) or Blue Water, MI to pick it up. Some franchises will charge you more.

Has anyone had the experience of packing a storage unit up and shipping it out? My personal stuff is still in a unit, and due to being pregnant, I really don't care to go out there with a U-Haul and load everything up. Not a good idea, at any rate, I'm too far along. I don't think getting an ABF crate or a uPack pod/box/thing will work since it's a storage unit. They may well charge me.

Any help is welcome!

Oh Naperville!

You're by me =D

I was actually thinking about renting a trailer instead to go on my dad's truck.

Make financially more sense to me.
