i'm in texas too, but not the concrete jungle known as houston. will probably be making the 3 hour drive there from san antonio to pick up hamid, though! I want to be there for his POE, and am not up for flying to JFK or somewhere else!

ok...is there anybody else from Texas that kept this information secret from me until I got back to Missouri :crying::lol: We are seriously going to have to meet when I move there!!! I'll invite you both over to the new house!! how's that sound?? will you come?

Well, I live in Dallas . . . . so I probably could have helped you navigate around the metroplex to speed you on your way faster to Houston, LOL!!! But since no one is thinking of moving here, I won't bother to pass on tips on where to buy ME food in the Dallas area (near my house there is some groceries and restaurants and not far from the mosque either).

Always crazy roads around Texas!!! But 2am wakeup calls?? hmmmmm, I don't know if I could figure out how to help you if I am asleep, hehe! Seriously, if given some advance notice I can probably help you out. I hate being lost at night too, and I can get disoriented when I am tired and it is night. Example, I was working on a project in Kansas City and decided to fly in on Sunday night (instead of get up at 4am to catch the first flight out with the rest of the team members) . . . well, since I was by myself without any of my trusty co-workers to point the way, I took the wrong direction coming out of the airport . . . so instead of arriving in Overland Park within the 45 minutes to one hour that it should have taken, I was 50 miles NORTH before I decided that the signs I was reading weren't going in the right direction, lol, then I couldn't figure out where I could exit to turn around because I was out in the middle of nowhere . . . and of course there are no lights on the highway!!! LOL, i did make it to Overland Park that night.

I have a friend (also married to a Moroccan) who lives in Richardson, so if you have any advice I can give them, let me know!

LOL, if they live in Richardson, they probably already know where all these places are because that is the area I am talking about. I live in northeast Dallas and am just below the Richardson city limits sign (just down the street from Texas Instruments). Ask them if they know Sara Bakery & Grocery (best pita bread around and fresh baked - and they have a small restaurant too), Jasmine Cafe (my favorite shish tawook fix - but I don't smoke the shisha, LOL), Afrah Bakery (yummy deserts) and the surrounding area??

Social eating events sure become a challenge. I grew up with an allergy to poultry so I'm very used to always have to ask "is there chicken or turkey in this?" because if there is and I eat it, my throat closes. So adding pork to the list was easy for me. We had our T-Day luncheon at work yesterday and because of my allergy/religious preference and a fellow coworker being semi-veggan we had a boca burger lasagna instead. Hahahaha. It was good!

boca lasagna sounds soooo goood!! i like to use the boca crumbles for chili/frito pie, but haven't tried much else!

Pork is used by so much stuff in my family! And I feel like whenever I mention the subject, that they think that I'm threatening their very existence or something! (like when I told my mom there will be no pork at our wedding and she said, "well YOU two don't have to eat it!" umm... it is OUR wedding, isn't it??!) sigh... I think I'll just have to do the "put some on your plate, but don't let anyone see you didn't eat it," routine this year, and next year I'll have the support of Hamid to help me stand up to my family.

I am speechless at the lack of respect. Sorry, I am sure you love your mother very much, but that to me is very tasteless.

Its kind of odd, I used to like pork, but over the years I have liked it less and less to the point I just won't eat it. Everyone thinks I am odd because I hate pepperoni and sausage on pizza, but to me its just a big blob of greasy yuck.

Interestingly my kids commented on the fact that I don't eat pork AFTER I got married, suggesting I "changed" for him. I kindly reminded them about the fact that I never eat pizza with pork. All they could say is "oh yeah, I forgot".

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'

Gee, you must have teenagers! Aren't they great for pointing out every fault they can find in us, even if they have to make some up? My son is 21 finally so he is just starting to get past that phase. I never thought he would get through it though.

We like very lean boneless pork chops, sausage and bacon and pepperoni, but that's about it. Abdel hated the BBQ boston butt I made - it was way too greasy for him.

It's bbq, it must be good. :P

Allah tries his chosen people through many hardships, but those who persevere through adversity, surrendering themselves before the will of Allah, shall be blessed with a superb reward.

-The Prophet Muhammad (SAW), as reported by Anas bin Malik

A time will come when the sky is torn apart; when the stars scatter, and the ocean drains away; and when the graves are tossed about, and laid open. At that time every man will be told what he has done, and what he has failed to do; and every woman will be told what she has done, and what she has failed to do.

LOL, just a little bit of googling on Boston Butt turns up the answer:

Pork Roast

Also indexed as: Boston Butt, Pork Picnic Arm, Pork Tenderloin

AND

BBQ Boston Butt

I (L) Google!!!

That recipe is a slow cooker version . . . so I wonder how fat it would be??? sounds very simple . . . .

Thanks Catherine. Yes, I cook it in the crock pot and it is super easy. You put one pork roast (the cut is called a boston butt) in the crock pot and let it cook until the meat falls apart. Take it out, drain off all the fat, pour 1 or 2 (depending on the size of the roast) bottles of barbecue sauce into the pot, shred the meat with 2 forks, and put it back in the pot until it's hot. It's about the easiest thing I ever made, but I guess it's still too greasy for Abdel. In fact, he doesn't like the shredded barbecue anywhere he's had it.

It's another one of those southern dishes I've learned to make since I got down here. I love collard greens but haven't tried cooking those for him, because the only way I know to cook them is with a pound of bacon, and that is not at all healthy.

Liz, I do greens (collards, mustards, kale) w/ some garlic & soy sauce or another favorite of mine is a product called "Soy Vey" which is kind of a soy sauce/teriyaki sauce w/ sesame seeds & ginger in it. I generally pan saute' mine and try not to get them so overly sauteed that they are dark, dark green. I never learned to do them w/ bacon cuz I started eating them when I was a vegetarian.

Are collard greens spicy/peppery? I tend to not like greens because I find them too hot.
