Hi all,

I was just sent a link to this forum and it looks quite helpful, so hi everybody :)

To quickly summarize my situation:

I'm German, 30 years old and live in Ireland at the moment (due to my previous job). My mother (also German) lives in California, is a permanent resident (greencard) and is married to an American. My intention is to move to America and work there. I have been browsing tons of websites these days and gathered lots of information about different visa etc.

So, I was wondering. Would I be eligible for the family integration visa? Or are there other visa I should/could apply for that would make more sense? Also, should my mother (as permanent resident) apply for this visa (as I think the parent would have to apply first regarding sponsorship etc), or would my stepfather (as American) do that?

The second question would be, whether I should apply for the work visa now already. Or wait for an update regarding the family visa?

I know these might be quite generic questions, but seeing all the helpful people here, I thought I'd give it a shot.

Thanks!

You're in for a long wait. If mom files for you, waiting time is 8 years (F2B category). If dad files for you (provided he married your mom before your 18th birthday), waiting time is 7 years (F1 category). You have to stay unmarried during the entire process for both categories. If you get married, it will void the F1 or F2B and you'll be transferred to the F3 category with a waiting time of 11 years.

You can try a work visa.

Apply for a work visa now. In addition to the above waiting times, there is a chance that the adult/ over 30 year old children's visa category may be removed in the future.

Your employer applies for the work visa, well their Lawyers do.

Apparently not always, as I got a response for one of the applications I sent over there and their response was, if I needed a visa, I couldn't start the job until October 2014 and they didn't mention anything about them doing it. So it seems kinda difficult to get a job if you apply from another country?

Anyway, thanks for the replies so far :)

Sounds like a H1b, there are others.

Applications for this year are taken so they are talking about April 2014 application.

Or perhaps they are just pointing out that it is not worth their effort so far out.
