If I saw a couple walking down the street and decided to stop my vehicle and insult the woman in front of her man, you know, call her a fat a$$ ugly foreign slant eyed pot bellied hairy lipped black yellow hispanic latino slope commie douche bag c###, you as a man, may take offense. Now suppose I get out, and start a new barrage of insults. You may even take a swing or two at me. I insult again, now you're throwing punches and I'm punching back. But being a candy #### wimp, I'm afraid you might hurt me, so I pull out trusty Colt and blow you away. I provoked the entire incident, but you hit me first, so I am totally without fault in the unfortunate incident.

You're right in principle. But levels exist. Totally without fault assumes zero consequences. Shouldn't we look for the correct consequence for the actual crime? The fact that so many assume such an obvious answer on both aides of the spectrum should tell you something.

Look, it's impossible to know exactly what happened and I feel like I only take a speculative view because some others assume guilt based on preconceived notions of the racism that plagues our society everyday. This is a true failure of society that I myself have been guilty of but strive to correct on a day to day basis. People are people and we all have our flaws. Is this argument really about what happened between two people in Florida or is it more indicative to the racial divide that has infected America and the world since as long as history recalls? It's a shame in my mind that we have to use tragic events like this to, as a species, attempt to come to terms with the predjudices and inequalities that plague us from day to day. My one hope is that the death of TM might further racial understanding but the sad truth is, it will likely only hinder them.

Man - TM should have punched the 'voice record' button on his HuaWei phone before GZ got too close - then the police would have a complete oral recording of what transpired.

You don't have to be a voter, or even registered to vote, to serve on a jury. They get potential jurors names from almost any public list - DMV records, property tax records, and more. There isn't even a Federal requirement to be a citizen to serve on a jury. One state is already attempting to pass a bill that would allow any resident to be called for jury duty.

I don't think anyone will riot if he is convicted. If GZ and TM were both white, or if GZ and TM were both black, I don't think this would even be a story. I know there wouldn't be 30 threads on it in P&R.

I remember this time in the early 90s when some white guys were found innocent of kicking a black guy's ###. People burned down a good part of L.A. over it. Not to mention Liberty City and Overton prior to that. Granted those cases involved the police doing the killing.
