In fact it is not uncommon at all.

In a homicide case, where there are no witnesses the police will more often than not hold the other party in custody for initial questioning. It is not uncommon for this person to be released and then be arrested again if warranted, once the evidence is examined.

Couldn't the perpetrator suddenly realize that he just shot the kid out of anger at getting popped in the face, and he was beating his own head on the ground out of frustration? From the police photos, there is already some confusion on exactly when those injuries occurred. Further evidence indicates the perpetrator may have been grabbing the shirt of the victim with one hand while he shot him with the other.

Exactly. The wounds on Zimmermann's head were not consistent with the fantastic account that Zimmermann gave to police. They were not consistent with having one's head "bashed" onto the concrete to where one feels that ones head is going to explode.

Zimmerman repeatedly told police that Trayvon Martin sucker-punched him, tried to suffocate him and bashed his head into the concrete to the point it felt his “head was going to explode.”

But Serino wondered why Zimmerman’s skull wasn’t fractured, why he didn’t know the street names of a tiny neighborhood where he’d lived for three years and why he had no defensive wounds on his hands.
