It just amazes me that on this century these kind of things still happen, like punishing with lashes, or killing people by throwing stones at them.

It should be noted, like the article said, she did break the law...yes, one person received ten less lashes, but he's also going to prison. I'm not defending the situation, but it is Saudi law...she was in a car alone with some man who wasn't her husband. Archaic, but...

So your saying..because she broke some law it was ok to rape her ???? OMG

I hope I missed some point you where making...because this line of thinking is taking a step backwards..like 200 years..

I'm saying, she broke the law. It's like this...if you have a driving infraction and cause an accident, you are still cited for that infraction, even if something horrible happened. Simply put, she broke the law before the rape...i'm not advocating the rape or saying she caused it. I'M JUST SAYING SHE DID BREAK THE LAW.

Do you think she was being punished for the offense she committed (which we Americans should not even accept as a crime) or also in part for being raped?

I'm not even going to speculate because there's no telling what people think. I think we've all learned that people come from different cultures and what we don't think is wrong, is wrong according to others...whether we agree or not.

It certainly sounds stupid to get punished for such a thing, but it is their law. Whatever...

mrc's right that she isn't punished for being raped, but for sitting in a car with a man.

But that's a barbaric f*cking law, too. (Plus, one that I'm sure has the convenient effect of making a woman less likely to report a rape. Would you if you knew there's a strong likelihood that by coming forward you'd be punished more than the gang rapist?)

Different strokes for different folks is all well and good, but I think that respect for other people's cultures has a limit, and it's probably around the point where, oh, we punish women more for sitting in cars with men than we do for the men GANG RAPING her. Personally, I'll save the different strokes stuff for, you know, cooking styles and music.

I feel the same way.

I was just suggesting that her harsh punishment might have been because the judge viewed her as having also committed the crime of being raped. Jus a thought.

Oh I definitely think it had everything to do with her punishment.

How can one claim God cares to judge a fornicator over judging a lying, conniving bully? I guess you would if you are the lying, conniving bully.
