I really shouldn't complain as I have breezed through the K1-to-Premenant Resident process with no delays or problems. However, after receiving approval for the removal of my conditional status, going to the closest district office (which is 2 hours away), having my passport stamped, and ultimately receiving my permenant greencard, I got a letter from the USCIS stating that I need to have my Biometrics taken again (I got them taken about 2 years ago - and they were done on the computerized system.

Has anyone else encountered this? It is only a problem because it is a long drive to the office, and they I have to go on a week day...and take a vacation day to do it. I think they may have made a mistake, but when I call the USCIS "help"line, surprisingly they are unable to help me, or give me any information....or be of any use at all!

Jazzle,

I've no experience like this, but I think I'd be inclined to write to the facility that sent you the notice for biometrics and question the need.

And a point of clarification - there's no such thing as a "permenant(sic) greencard" - the greencard you have expires in 10 years and will need to be renewed.

Most people are called for biometrics again before they get approval, but it seemed you were not. Go ahead and question as to why they want them, but I would say they probably do. I too had to take time off and drive 2 hours to get there by 8am. I felt that I was lucky -- lots of people have to drive much further than that!

I hate to beat a dead horse

BUT

I am also confused about the biometric thing. On another site, www.usvisa4thai.com, nobody has had to go for biometrics. We have mentioned it and asked if anyone had been notified and everyone said no. We plan to leave the country as soon as the NOA arrives. If a notice to appear for biometrics arrives it will sit unopened and unread for three months or so. What happens then?

Our biometrics notice arrived about Nov 20, with an appointment for Nov 30. The notice said that if you don't show up for the appointment or reschedule prior to the appointment, they will consider your application to be abandoned. I don't know how strict they are about that, or what the procedure might be to reopen things if that happened.

I also have no idea how they decide who does or doesn't get biometrics appointments for I-751s. On the face of it, it seems pointless, wasteful, and silly, as they already have the biometrics from the original Green Card. The whole point of using biometrics is that they're supposed to be pretty stable for most of a lifetime, not something that changes every year or two.

If I am reading your time line correctly you received the biometric appointment notice two days after getting your I-751 NOA. That would work for us. I wonder if that time frame is the norm?

Pointless, Wasteful and Silly. That would make a good government motto. I think you've come up with something.
