Hi, I am Malaysian and my fiance is USC.We are both living in Canada now where we are applying for our k1 visa. We are in the process of waiting for Packet 4 for our interview date in Montreal. We are hoping to make it to the wedding we planned, on the 9th of August. We will also like for my family from Malaysia to be there. They have all been waiting for our green light for them to make the arrangements to come over to the states. They will have to apply for a b2 visa to attend our wedding. Our question now is, can they apply for the visas now, valid for 3 months or so, in case we can have it on the 9th or if we have to postpone it a few weeks? Do they grant b2 visas for open periods of time? or is it dependent on the exact dates of travel? If so, do they have to state purpose of visit to be tourism or should they explain the uncertainty of our wedding situation, being dependent on our interview date? We just dont want anyone to be left out because they couldnt get their b2 visa on time.

Usually visas are good for years. This says Malaysian B2s are generally valid for 10 years (the max worldwide). http://travel.state.gov/visa/fees/fees_5455.html?cid=9650

is there a specific way to apply it within those reciprocity context? from what we understand, the process is :

1. DS 160

2. Payment through standard chartered

3. Visa Interview at embassy..

at the end of that link you provided, http://travel.state....5.html?cid=9650 this information was posted. So my family will all have to submit these documents at the interview or before? I am sorry if this is a silly question, but we are up to our noses with all the visa stuff, concurrently applying for our k-1 visa, my visa extension in Canada and my family's b-2 visa to come to a wedding we are not sure is going to take place unless we get our interview date soon!

Go to the Consulate web site and they will see what the process for obtaining a B2 is.

Please not that it is not a given one will be issued. Some may get one some may not.

The page I showed you is just information about all the visas that come out of Malaysia. Not everyone who applies gets one, but generally there is a standard validity that varies by country. In some countries, all B2 visas issued are good for just a year, in others, all approved visas are good for 10 years. There can always be exceptions made as well.

To apply you follow the instructions on the US Embassy in Malaysia website, not through the site I showed you. The documents listed are general information for what documents are like in Malaysia (like it means that generally birth certificates are available to people, if the thing they are applying for requires it. Some countries don;t have birth certificates). It's not a recipe for what you do. You should now that because there are many other visa types listed on there, it;s not a page just for B2 visas, understand?

Look here: http://malaysia.usembassy.gov/niv.html

Also available in Malaysian language (which is apparently called Bahasa Malaysia).

So, I found this information on the malaysian embassy website, does it mean, we will first have to get the visa application process done, go for the interview, and then apply for the maximum validity (120months) ?

How does this work? And what should they put down as intended travel dates? Does it matter if they travel on a different date than stated on the application form?

Are they required to provide an itinerary of their visit to the states?

http://travel.state.gov/visa/fees/fees_3272.html The Difference between Visa Issuance Fees and Visa Application Fees

The visa application fee, also known as the MRV fee, is a nonrefundable fee paid by all applicants for U.S. visas, whether the application is approved or refused. It covers the costs associated with processing a U.S. visa application. Current nonimmigrant visa application fees can be found on our Fees – Visa Services webpage. (This webpage also lists the few visa categories for which application fees are not required.)

While all visa applicants are required to pay the visa application fee, the visa issuance fee is only charged to an approved nonimmigrant visa applicant after the visa interview, and only if the applicant is from a country that is subject to visa issuance fees based on the concept of reciprocity.

Thank you again!

You apply for the visa and you get what you get. They should put their best guess as when they will travel, but it is okay to change it. It's not okay to purposefully lie about why or when you are going in order to get the visa through trickery, then to use it for another purpose. But small innocuous changes are fine.

Thanks so much for your replies.. So I will tell them to apply for a range that our wedding will be falling within.. Then if travel dates change due to our wedding date, I'm guessing it will not matter as long as they are within the range they get at their application stage...Thanks a bunch!
