Administrative Processing Before Interview??

NVC just told me that our case is in administrative processing. I am a little confused, because we haven't scheduled our interview yet. Has this happened to anyone else? How long will it take? I'm pretty crushed as we really, really wanted to get that interview scheduled asap.

(My fiance doesn't have ties to a Middle Eastern/Muslim country, but we made some very annoying, very frustrating mistakes on our initial application that probably have impacted this decision. I guess we should just be glad they haven't denied us entirely.)

If you don't mind me asking what were these mistakes, knowing the details you will result in better answers.

Yes, it does happen before an interview and if mistakes were made they will investigate and look deeper into whatever they see as inconsistent.

Hopefully it will not be misrepresentation which carries a life time ban.

You mentioned he does not have ties to MENA country, where was he born ?

You mentioned he does not have ties to MENA country, where was he born ?

He was born in Quebec (as were his parents, grandparents, etc). He's not Muslim (I'm pretty sure he's never met a Muslim person.)

We made two incredibly dumb mistakes that I am beating myself up over.

First, when we filled out the original information for the I-129F application, he listed his birthplace as Town X, when in fact he was born in City Y (about 10 kilometers away -- he lived in Town X but the hospital was in City Y).

Second, (and this one is especially infuriating to me because I asked him multiple times if he was sure, because I thought it was weird), he thought that his middle name wasn't on any official documentation. Because of this, we didn't include his middle names on any of the original paperwork. Anyway, it isn't on his passport or any of his Canadian/provincial IDs, but it is on his birth certificate.

In our response to Packet 3, we changed the information on all of the forms so it was correct, and I wrote a short letter explaining the changes.

The mistakes you listed aren't major, they should be able to be taken care of without any big ordeal.

How does his not being Muslim tie into this?

How does his not being Muslim tie into this?

It seems like AP (especially after interview) is most common when an applicant has ties to Middle Eastern/Muslim countries, so I wanted to make it clear that this AP is for other reasons (presumably, the errors in our application).

I was wondering the same question. I don't understand where the muslim part comes from. Maybe the OP can explain this better?

If that person was born in Canada, why USCIS will think he has ties with a muslim country????

I think there are 2 kinds of administrative processing in the K1 game. There is the dreaded AP which we sometimes see on here where cases languish for weeks or months after the interview, and then there is just normal "administrative processing" which means what it usually means--somewhere between "we've received it" and "we've sent it to the embassy."

I should have been more clear. Generally, it seems to me that most people placed in Administrative Processing have some ties (either born in a Middle Eastern/Muslim country or their parents have ties or something.) As a casual browser of this forum, I haven't really read many examples of a person being in AP who don't have these ties. I wanted to make it clear that our AP is for another reason (based on more searching, it seems to be because of the middle name thing), because the advice and timeline might be different than the more nebulous, and more common, "AP because the US wants to make the applicant doesn't have terrorist ties."

Anyway, it seemed relevant to me, and I didn't mean to insult anyone or seem biased or anything like that!

I don't think anyone thought you were being insulting, just trying to clear up why you mentioned it. A lot of times people ask questions on this site but only give part of the story.

I will keep my fingers crossed (and update the thread, as well, of course!)

(And yes, it was seeing numbers like 16 months that really scared me when I saw we went into AP... That's an absolutely unconscionable wait time, especially without any way to know how long the total wait will be.)

Yes, it is crazy, especially when the end result was denial. I really don't think NVC will keep you in AP that long though. If I were you I would want to be there for the interview in case they want to put him on AP again afterwards.

My case was in AP after interview. I never knew why, but Social Security gave me ####### when I had my SSN card done because my middle name isn't anywhere but on my birth certificate. I have no ties to anything remotely suspicious, no criminal history, never visited a country who has/had disputes with the U.S. Sometimes it just happens. And AP is an administrative term that can mean anything from it's received and waiting on a desk to it's under review to verify something.

The errors you listed are minor. They probably just need to double check he is the same person. I know it's easier said than done, but you are very close to having your visa. Take a breather and relax :) As it's been mentioned before it would be good for you/your fiance to bring the corrected forms to the interview and mention the clerical mistakes you've made. I didn't use my middle name on any form during the process and it is listed on my birth certificate. It was never brought up and I only realized this could have been the reason I was in AP for couple days after having issues with Social Security. But then again, the Social Security people I met were not the most perceptive/well trained people I've met... better go there prepared ;)

Good luck!

US citizen since April 2016

ROC completed April 2014

AOS from K1 completed February 2012
