No, you can't do that either. It's one of the reasons I'm all for immigrants not living in the same locale; it doesn't facilitate learning of the language or integration into the community. Social ghettoisation of any form is bad, as far as I am concerned.

I don't have a problem with people who choose to live in some Catholic township, but I DO have a huge problem with them not making people of other faiths welcome there. Just like a gated community which has a selling point of "less than the average number of African Americans". That's discrimination, plain and simple. Whether it's racism or "religionism", it's just as wrong.

Oh, trust me Ace, it wasn't an attack. If it was, you'd have known about it. It was merely an observation based on your previous postings ;)

I just think that if people really can't see a problem with allowing segregation of society and only allowing people to live in an area if they're deemed "morally acceptable" then they lack any sense of perspective or foresight. I can't solve that problem for them, and I pity them.

That article didn't say anything about limiting people living there that are "morally acceptable", only having control over, through contracts and leases, of what the businesses can and can not sell or provide services of....

It's the start of a slippery slope, and I don't like the ongoing social implications.

Exactly. Just more of the "holier than thou" #######. I say let them do that over there in Gitmo once we relocated the folks that currently occupy the place. They can even call it Fantasy Island for all I care.

LMFAO

I think we're on the same page here.

I personally feel that God is all loving and all inclusive. He wants each of us to love and pray with those that our own personal prejudices would want us to stay away from. Jesus welcomed the prostitutes, the lepers--those of his time that were considered "unclean" and "immoral". He came to earth to teach those that these are all children of God. Seperating each other isn't what I think Jesus would do. I understand the human want to do this. We all will have a judgement day and I am sure that these Catholics think that they could live a more holy life surrounding themselves with like minded and faith abiding people. I understand that. I belive they are missing the boat on the call to charity and acceptance that tests us all. :innocent:

I think it's not a "being holy" issue, but a "being pious" issue. And Ace, you're right - AFAIK, every branch of Christianity is about inclusivity and helping people who want to see that Jesus died to save them, not about shining hubs of religion whilst all the sinners revel in moral decline.

And some of these very people who will live in this "Catholic community" will be the very ones who sit in mass praying diligently and smiling to the person beside them, pretending to be holier than thou, but the minute they get outside the church, they begin bitching and talking about people behind their backs, spreading gossip and innuendo. I'm Catholic, but I also know that sometimes, some of them just get it all ars*ways.

All I know is that I won't be applying there any time soon!

Well...I'm glad I saw an interview with Monaghan before replying to this thread....

If what he claims is true, I don't see a problem with this. He specifically said when questioned that people of all races, faiths, creeds, etc would be welcome...it would NOT be a Catholic only community. The university however is a different story...

http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/wireStory?id=1683290

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. Mar 3, 2006 (AP)— The founder of Domino's Pizza backtracked Friday from earlier comments that he'd like to establish a new town in Florida governed by strict Roman Catholic principles, denying access to birth control and pornography.

Thomas S. Monaghan has pledged $250 million to establish Ave Maria, a town 25 miles east of Naples built around a the first new Catholic university in the United States in four decades. Both the town and the university, founded by Monaghan, are set to open next year.

"There's a lot of misconceptions about this. I don't really have a vision for the town. I have a vision for the university," Monaghan said Friday on ABC's "Good Morning America."

Last year he told a a Catholic men's group in Boston that pornographic magazines won't be sold in town, pharmacies won't carry condoms or birth control pills, and cable television will carry no X-rated channels. Monaghan said Friday those comments were "out of place."

"The town is open to anybody," Monaghan said. "The university it's a different story. It will be primarily Catholic."

The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida promised lawsuits if the proposals were to become law. Florida Attorney General Charlie Crist said he saw nothing that violated state law in Monaghan's proposals.

"We do not discriminate against anyone," said Paul Marinelli, CEO of Barron Collier, an agricultural and real estate firm that is developing the town in partnership with Monaghan.

Marinelli said it will be requested that stores not sell contraceptives, but the sale of birth control won't be restricted. He said the town would not bar access to any cable television program, but the town will not have adult bookstores or topless clubs.

"We're not trying to create a city with walls around it that isolates from the world," Marinelli said.

The community will be set on 5,000 acres with a massive church and a 65-foot tall crucifix at the center of town.

So who knows....we shall see I guess...

I'm really not sure how I feel about this whole thing...as someone pointed out the Amish & the exclusivity of their communities. I wouldn't be down with it at all, but what's wrong with people of like-minded beliefs wanting to be around each other?

On the other hand, it reminds me of that movie The Village.

Now, unless they completely isolate themselves from the world in a physical sense...ie moats, living around each other isn't going to make their kids any safer. Pedophiles could still drive in. People could still drive out & get porn, condoms, etc. It's really not going to change anything.

But I will admit one HUGE gripe with the Catholic Church. Btw, I am Catholic. I truly feel that Jesus doesn't care if I use condoms/the pill/etc. And I'll tell you why. I was married to a Catholic & before we married we had to go on this 'engagement retreat' where ppl from the Church dealt with all sorts of married stuff. I asled them...do you honestly believe Jesus wants me to have like 50 bazillion kids? Is this really a feasible expectation? The Church's official stance? They taught THE RYTHYM METHOD.

Which is nothing more than less-effective BIRTH CONTROL. So it's just semantics.

I see no problem with this. The guy is buliding a new community and everyone moving there will know the rules, if you agree you move in, if you don't go somewhere else. Not like he's buying an town and changing the rules on people already living there.

People are allowed to set up senior citizen communities where people with child are barred from moving there, so if that's allowed so should this. He isn't barring anyone from living in his town, they just have to agree to follow the rules while living there and that what comminity associations do.
