I called to ask about closing both bank and credit cards, the credit card people said I could not have an active account if I was moving to the US. They wanted to close it and have me mail/wire the payments I had left (paying off the debt as normal). I ended up keeping my bank account and credit open (just didn't confirm I was actually moving). I now transfer money to my bank account and pay off my credit cards, which are still open and useful to have for Canada purchases. Don't let your Canada credit go bad, a few times here in the US, they have checked my credit there to approve me on a car for example.

Might want to make sure you have a Canadian address to send statements to or turn off paper statements though.

I closed everything--except my Presidents choice bank acct-0--and if PC knows ur leaving, they want to close ur acct--so I just use my parents addy in Stoon. Opened up my wallet and anythign that I could close I did--even including movie store rental places (not like they exist now, lol)

If you have RRSP, one has to notify whoever holds them in Canada that you are moving--they sent me a form to fill out (keep in mind this was back in 2004) And one has to notify the IRS each year if you still have RRSP (form 8891)

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I kept my Royal Bank account open and then opened an RBC USA account and I transfer money between the two easily and pay bills. My BMO credit card I kept open with a USA address no problems, as well as my VanCity visa. I have a PC bank account and card that I just kept open with my mom's address attached to it.

I closed my accounts but kinda wish I hadn't. I had a pretty nice line of credit built up through TD Canada Trust. I know the credit wouldnt help me here in the US, but if we ever moved back up to Canada, I would love to have kept that available to me.

I shut down my VanCity account - though I regret that, they really are awesome. I maintained my RBC account which I've had since I was a child, and opened up a USD$-CAD$ savings account so I could transfer money in there when I travel back to Canada. Just make sure you pay the fees, show some activity, and you should be good to go.

Not cutting off your Canadian accounts is a very good idea if you intend to return, maintain an active credit score, have backup accounts for travel, and the rest. You can always use a Canadian address (my permanent Canadian address is at my mother's house) if they give you any flak for being in the US.
