Well the film was full of nuance, there were nice moments, despicable moments, the filmmaker questioned herself, and tried to give people credit, the people fell into predictable patterns, broke out of them, and went back again.

So you are welcome to your opinion, but to water down a nuanced film about a complex phenomenon into what you want to see, a success story (which I would argue it is not) then I think that is blinders, yes. As for the gutter, I was quoting the USC in that film.

Thank you for allowing me an opinion.

Very generous of you.

I like the film clip as well as the you tube, something I would watch but not something I would pay extra to watch.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

I thought the youtube was a shemale/ladyboy by the song, and the angle she kept bending over.

Wow. If that's all you saw, then you've got blinders on.

What about the part when the immigrant said she was going to leave him years later once she was established and after he paid for her school?

What about the part where the USC said he was a selfish ####?

There was much I found disturbing about that film. I hesitate to say either one was more guilty of taking advantage of the other.

That the couple needed a translator to get across their emotions to each other was probably the strangest thing for me. If you can't understand your spouse, how are you ever going to reach common ground on more than the most superficial level?

I will bow to your expertise in this matter.

I've gotten over it but I was very miffed when my K1 was denied. DOS approved this shenanegan when mine was denied. And we are from the same city, speak the same language, same religion, etc. It simply makes no sense. None at all.

I agree.

:(

It really is quite ridiculous. When you have a more level playing field culturally, it should be a no-brainer. Sorry you're going through this.

The scenario in the film reminds me of the former VJ members who communicated primarily through Yahoo smilies.

My beloved is currently passed out on the couch with Judge Dredd providing filmic accompaniment to his snoring. It's much easier this way.

Yes, the pregnant pause when the man said to the filmmaker, "If it weren't for you we wouldn't be getting married" made me cringe.

I don't think the USC is that film cared about communication. He seemed so pleased with himself that he was getting laid that everything was dandy in his world. "I lost 20 lbs, sex and vegetables, you should try it!" Also cringe worthy.

And the woman was going through so much, and the man was just blank. He didn't care, he wasn't invested.

It's that sort of feeling when you're so embarrassed for the other person but also embarrassed yourself for being a witness to it.

I bet the woman leaves when she gets USC; I don't think she got it yet.

We saw it on tv just randomly. I was like "oh my god it's like people from VJ." My husband said "It's like that lovely man from Alaska who almost slept with his mother in law!"

I will bow to your expertise in this matter.

 Well, a healthy skepticism when they play the song "dude looks like a lady" will save you someday.

I know that this discussion has branched out and has probably run its course. But reading through the "Effects of Major Family Changes..," you see this scenario all the time, in various states of progression. In most cases where this hasn't worked, the couples aren't really compatible to begin with; they have different communication styles, don't have much in common, there is a huge imbalance in economic status, etc. One just wants to move to the US, and another just wants a subservient companion. Recently saw a great documentary that explores this. Let it serve as a cautionary tale:

Seeking Asian Female

A Documentary by Debbie Lum

Here is an excerpt from This American Life

http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/491/tribes?act=3#play

Please understand - this film maker detests 'Yellow Fever' and sought to find a couple where the Yellow Fever was the worst and the lady sufferred the most.

It's not common, and this film-maker took 'the stereotype' and ran with it. Ran through the wall, and about 12 points past it.

We've a lively discussion on it, over at http://www.chinafamilyvisa.com/ - I invite anyone actually interested in the history of this film, the background of the film-maker, and my conversations with her to stop by, have a longish read.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Interesting

I only saw the clip but it all seemed quite tame compared to what you see on here every week.

I can think of a number of very long running threads that have much more potential from a journalistic perspective.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

You might want to link to the actual thread where the discussion is taking place. I couldn't find anything about it from looking at the main page.

Seems like the guy running that site has his heart set on moving to Chiang Mai.
