Outstanding UK student loan

Hi there, so I was thinking about my student loan that I pay back automatically out of my pay cheque each month. What happens when I finally make it over to the USA? Has anyone had any experience of this? Do they get 'frozen' or are you expected to continue to make payments once you get a job in the USA?

I think it would depend on your agreement with them in the UK. Check with the them.

You have to repay your student loan in full no matter where in the world you move to read the info from the Student loans company. You have to inform them that you are moving and either repay in full on the day or provied them with your US bank details.

It depends on the terms of your loan when you took it out. Some people have a clause that says it must be repaid in full before leaving the country, others can continue to pay in instalments from abroad. You should just call them up and they'll let you know your options.

I've just arranged to repay the small amount I have left by direct debit, so I can move without worrying about it, for instance.

There's no concept of freezing and they will want the money back. Because SL works the way it does through HMRC, they don't know what you've paid until the end of the tax year when you pay through your employer - so feasibly it could be a year before they notice you're gone and haven't paid, but then they'll start chasing you about it. Best to just deal with it while you're still here.

Yeah I've just been researching this, if you don't inform them after 3 months of leaving for the US they will automatically bill you £246 per month, whereas in the UK if you earned 20k you'd repay £37 per month! So you need to inform them of your income. But if you are earning nothing at first or below £16335 you won't have to repay. It was an unpleasant surprise for me to find out as I was under the impression that they wouldn't go after emigrants :-(

This is weighing heavily on me, too. I still owe a lot more than I would like (I don't earn enough and have never done so, to make the auto repayments any use!) but I hate the thought of emigrating with that amount still outstanding. I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and ask for help from family, so that I repay them instead of the SLC for as long as it takes

I've done some looking into it, and it looks as if once you leave the country and get a job in the USA, you have to file an assessment form and you will be required to pay monthly as you would do in this country. So actually I feel a lot less worried about it now than I did! Paying it ALL back in one go would never be a option for me sadly... I am going to call and let them know anyway before I leave, and then update again when I eventually find work.

I'm not entirely sure I can pay it all, but I'm going to have the awkward convo with mum on the off chance it might be an option, haha.

I setup an arrangement after deciding to stay here, whereby I'll pay it back monthly on the same basis that I was in the UK.

I think so long as you keep them informed and be honest (as with in the UK) then you should be all right.
