How Europeans stereotype one another, in one chart

Europeans are developing some very strong feelings about Germany, which many call the most trustworthy, most arrogant and least compassionate nation in Europe, according to a fascinating new study by Pew.

The polling firms report on European attitudes shows declining confidence toward the European Union and, perhaps as a result, increasingly complicated feelings about Germany, the country seen as the center of the union. The euro crisis, Pew says, appears to be exacerbating long-held views about Germans and reinforcing general stereotypes among Europeans about each other.

This chart summarizes Pews findings on whom Europeans consider to be the most and least trustworthy, arrogant and compassionate. The results are pretty revealing. Here are a few observations:

o Germans are considered by far the most trustworthy. Everyone trusts Germans above all other nationalities, except for the Greeks, who say Greeks are the most trustworthy. Only Greeks and Germans voted themselves the most trustworthy. In France, 43 percent call Germans trustworthy.

o Germans are also seen as the most arrogant, but France is a close second. The French are identified as the most arrogant in Germany, the U.K. and, weirdly, in France itself. Its not clear why French people would call themselves the most arrogant; is it a badge of honor, perhaps?

o Only the Brits, who have hinted for some time that they may leave the Union, challenge the Germans in lack of compassion, according to European poll respondents.

I'm pretty sure that table is terribly misleading. Raw data would be more informative. Poland sees Germany as both the most trustworthy and the least trustworthy while France sees itself as both the most arrogant and the least arrogant. All that means to me is that when you have an 8 way race and all you list is the winner, you may be missing the fact that the winner potentially got as little as 13% of the vote. It's just more than anyone else.

While I doubt the actual numbers go that low, we're probably not talking about something close to a majority for most of these questions. In the end, what this means is that while stereotypes probably aren't very strong, if you ask people a question that doesn't really matter they'll probably come up with an answer anyways.

germans more arrogant than french...insteresting.

Ha, beat me to it.

This is a perfect thread to talk about stereotypes, like.... why are Asians so bad at driving?

My wife is Asian. Not the best driver.

Ruh-roh. Have you asked her why she's so bad at driving? Is it because of poor eyesight from eating a diet of white rice? Makes me shake my head, but damn those Asians are friggin smart.

Most likely, its just because she isn't familiar with this area. She did fine in Toronto which is a much more difficult place to drive. She does have poor eye sight, but you know.... glasses fix all.

Depends on the Asian. Those who come from a place with good public transportation tend not to drive very much. Those who do drive regularly drive as well as non-Asians.

In Mongolia, you have to be a good driver, because of how crazy the driving is.

What would Xenu do?

If everyone was a good drive, the driving wouldn't be crazy

according to my french canadian other half, poor driving is the result of being female and/or american.

unless he's driving in montreal, then he remembers that no one in the world is as capable of driving properly as he is. which brings us back to the arrogance bit..rolleyes.gif

Given Germany's insistence on austerity policies that keep crisis nations Italy, Spain and Greece hurting (high unemployment, brain drain, erosion of the safety nets), I can see why these three would rate Germany as most arrogant and least compassionate. Interesting, though, that at least two out of those three still see Germany as most trustworthy as well.

What's with Bavarian cream? Or is that just an exotic way of saying a German made it?
