Hi everybody.,

I am finally departing for the US in 3 days. Do I need to take with me my Ukrainian internal passport, or only my international passport with visa in it. Will I need my internal ukraiian passport when I will be coming back for avisit as a spouse of American citizen? Taking both passports kind of bothers me a bit, because that will be too many IDs in one bag. What do you think? THanks!

If you are going to need your internal passport upon a return to Ukraine, where would you be keeping it? I think the answer is yes, take it with you. You will not need it in America but you will when you return to Ukraine as a green card holding spouse.

Welcome to America!

My parents stay in Ukraine, so I thought to leave it at home. Do you mean that I will need to show my internal passport + international passport+ green card at the port of entry in Ukraine? ( when coming over for a visit).?

No, I believe that the procedure upon arrival is just your international passport. My wife hasn't mentioned having any problems but then she carries both passports when she is returning to Ukraine.

I would bring both passports with you. you just never know.

Having been a Boy Scout (many years ago), I'm a firm believer in the motto "Be prepared". I always tell my wife that it's far better to have "it" with you and not need "it" than to need "it" and not have "it".

Hi guys,

WHen I was leaving, I asked flight representative about the internal passport. She replied that it is actually forbidden to take your Ukrainian passport outside the territory of Ukraine. I ended up not taking mine with me, because I decided that I did not need it. But for those who may be interested in this topic too - it is illegal to take your passport abroad. And nobody really needs it there also.

Just gotta say, this makes it so obvious that women's and men's brains work entirely differently. I literally cannot comprehend why "too many IDs in one bag" would be the reason not to take one's internal passport! wink.png If this is a female fashion/looking pretty issue, couldn't you just put it in your coat pocket?

You're a little mixed up here. Many of the FSU countries have two passports, domestic (internal) and international. She'll need the international one to get back in the country and the internal one to fend off bribe-seeking policeman claiming she's an illegal immigrant from the Caucuses or a Central Asian country. So the internal passport is the equivalent of your driver's license that you carry with you in the States.

I gotta say, it sounds hilarious that you cannot take your internal passport out of the country. How could the authorities even enforce this? What goal does it serve? It sounds almost as funny as Russia's unenforceable rule banning dual citizenship. And besides, I'm sure a few xrivny would solve any problems if you were confronted about t the law violation wink.png

I assume it's because it's the property of Ukraine and they do not want to let it out of the country. They cannot enforce it, nor would they want to.

BTW, Ukraine also does not recognize dual citizenship. If you get another citizenship, you lose your Ukrainian one (if your other one is recognized by Ukraine somehow, don't know how it's supposed to work). In theory, you must use your Ukrainian passport when coming into Ukraine if you're a citizen. In practice, you can just use your USA passport once you get citizenship for coming into the Ukraine, even if it says that you were born in Ukraine and nobody cares. I emigrated from Ukraine when I was 11, and I have no idea as to whether I'm still considered a Ukrainian citizen or not. Nobody questioned me when I went over there with a US passport.

The decision made had nothing to do with male versus female brain, but more with logic and a back-up. I do NOT need my internal passport abroad, and leaving it at home is a good way for me to have my IDs in both countries ( in case I lose one of them).

International passport mentions person's nationality, so what is an internal passport for, if international already proves your citizenship?

Hilarious or not, it is what the letter of law says;) Why to bend it, if there is no need for that?

I second that. I went back with the US passport with no issues.

Once wifey gets her US citizenship she intends to do likewise.
