Hi all,

I just realized that I am already within the 90 days to apply for my citizenship as my anniversary of 3 years is coming up in July. I have already planned a trip to Canada for a relative's wedding and it will be from May 25th to June 10th. If I submit my N-400 application prior to May 25th, am I allowed to travel to Canada? I obviously would not have received my US passport yet. any advice would be great!

Thanks

Sure, you may travel...as long as your permanent resident card is valid! yes.gif

The 90-day window is the earliest you may send in your N-400 application. If you like, you may even send it after July.

Hope this helps you some. Have a safe trip to Canada! biggrin.png

I did a search in the top right of this forum for travelling after submission of N400. You can read of other people's experiences at the link I provided below. I don't believe you'll have a problem travelling in anyway. At your interview however, you must bring your passport so that the IO can verify the dates and length of your travels.

Also, ensure that someone can check your mail. I would hate you having to miss your biometrics appt... as it can further lengthen your citizenship journey, but if needed, it can be rescheduled once you receive it and contact them.

Biometrics can be rescheduled. When asking, have your travel information like flight numbers available in case they want to record it if you call over the phone. You need your biometrics letter in hand for this, or if it hasn't been received 30 days after the posted date on it, you can call and ask for another to be reissued.

Also, you may be able to get into a biometrics appointment earlier than the stated date. Bring all necessary ID (green card, driver's license/passport, biometrics letter) and show up early if you can at all. If you're doing this because of a conflict of dates/vacation, also bring along evidence of the conflict. In the 4 biometrics appointments I've had over the past however many instances, I was able to get into 3 of them early. USCIS apparently knew whenever I was making a rare trip out of state. :) Being polite to the agent, explaining your situation, and asking if they can process you at that time goes a long way. They were always gracious, though you may have to wait a few minutes more.

If you are not in a hurry, why don't you wait until you come back to mail it that way you include the trip to Canada in your application? It's a 15-day trip, I don't think it make a big difference if you decide to apply when you get back.

Otherwise if you do decide to send it before you leave, you can mail it anytime and you should be back in time for your biometrics since this is scheduled around 25-30 days after they receive your application. Depending on your ASC, if you send it on May 24, your bio will probably be scheduled between June 20-30. If you decide to do this, you will have to tell the io to add that trip to your application at the time of the interview.

Thanks - I want to try to get this processed as soon as possible as I am delaying a trip becuase I want to get citizenship. I was thinking of submitting right on the 24th, but leaving on the 25th. Should I really not include that trip on the form? and just add later? Even if my ticket is already booked?

No, do not include the trip as you submitted your application before the trip. The questions specifically asks how many trips have you taken outside the United States and this trip has not been taken yet.

Mailing it on May 24 is a good idea as the bio should be home when you get back from your trip.

At the interview, just stop the io and add the trip to your application.
