Verdict reached in Philadelphia abortion trial

Philadelphia (CNN) -- A Philadelphia jury has reached a verdict in the murder trial of an abortion doctor accused in the deaths of four infants and a woman at his clinic.

Dr. Kermit Gosnell, 72, was accused of killing babies by using scissors to cut their spinal cords. Authorities alleged that some of the infants were born alive and viable during the sixth, seventh and eighth months of pregnancy.

He also was accused in the death of Karnamaya Mongar, 41, who died of an anesthetic overdose during a second-trimester abortion at his West Philadelphia clinic.

Convicted Pa. abortion doctor gets life in prison

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A Philadelphia abortion doctor convicted of killing three babies born alive at his grimy clinic was spared a possible death sentence Tuesday in a deal with prosecutors.

Dr. Kermit Gosnell gave up his right to appeal and in return will spend life in prison.

Prosecutors had sought the death penalty because Gosnell killed more than one person, and his victims were especially vulnerable given their age. But Gosnell's own advanced age had made it unlikely he would ever be executed before his appeals ran out.

Prosecutors instead agreed to two life sentences without parole, and Gosnell was to face further sentencing Wednesday: in the death of the third baby, an involuntary manslaughter conviction in the death of a patient and hundreds of lesser counts.

Gosnell's lawyer, Jack McMahon, said his client accepts the verdict and isn't sorry he went to trial. He said Gosnell gave up a somewhat better deal early on but wanted to air the issues in court and is satisfied that he did so.

The guy is 72. It takes 15 years on average to carry out a death sentence. He'll probably die before that anyways. So no point in wasting another dime on him. Lock him up, lose the key.
