Virtually all media attention on a Pentagon report last week focused on an increase in service members’ claims of sexual abuse in an anonymous survey, but unmentioned were statistics showing that a significant percentage of such actually investigated cases were baseless.

From 2009 to 2012, the number of sexual abuse reports rose from 3,244 to 3,374 — a 4 percent increase.

During the same period, the number of what the Pentagon calls “unfounded allegations” based on completed investigations of those reports rose from 331 to 444 — a 35 percent increase.

In 2012, there were 2,661 completed investigations, meaning that the 444 false complaints accounted for about 17 percent of all closed cases last year. False reports accounted for about 13 percent of closed cases in 2009.

About 2 weeks ago, we had to sit and watch "The Invisible War", which was soley about sexual assault and rape within the military. There was an excerpt from the movie that said when the women tried to file suit against the government, they were told rape is an occupational hazard they had to deal with. Made me sick.

Come on now. False reports may only "outpace" reports of rape (wrong assertion to make though based on the dubious data given). Most women do NOT report their rape. In the general population and especially in the military. Also, their "expert" in this piece is an analyst at the Family Research Council. Obvious BS is obvious.

All of this. I read the article and couldn't believe what we're calling an "expert" here. Rape in the military is often reported less often than it is outside of the military, which is beyond shocking giving how many women don't report it in civilian life :(

I am the USC/petitioner.

Generally because as we saw in the film, the women get punished, the accused get promoted.

Oppressive matriarchy? rofl.gif If such a thing exists [it doesn't] I'd happily be guilty as charged.

Frankly if in this day and age you find women's rights and gender equality to be immasculating then too damn bad for you.
