What I meant was - in America is it now considered offensive to use the term 'negro'? If I read Laura's account of what happened correctly, she was admonished in America.

Growing up in the 50's and 60's that was the polite word. What I'm wondering is - has that changed?

I've always known it to be a politically incorrect term.

I think pre-Civil Rights era, the terms 'negro' and 'colored' were often used, particularly in the deep south, so those terms are associated with that era and the segregated south.

I never hear anybody say 'negro' anymore. I sort of thought the term was passe' - that it had been abandoned for 'black'.

During slavery, slaves were refered to as Africans. After emancipation, the words evolved from Colored to Negro to Black and now to African-American. (although we are still in a transition between the latter two it seems). At the time each term was embraced by the AF/AM community, I suspect part of the strugle to clarify the comunity and culture as slavery becomes more of a memory than reality. As each new term for identy was embraced, the older terms were seen as arcane or bigoted.

I love it when an ignorant reporter calls a black person from the UK an 'African-American'.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

then what about the UNCF?

I always wondered about that. I thought it was strange considering that I think many black people would consider it offensive to be called a negro. I dunno.

According to Wikipedia:

"From the 18th century to the mid-20th century, "negro" (later capitalized) was considered the correct and proper English word for slaves and freed slaves of sub-Saharan African origin. It fell out of favor by the 1970s in the United States. In current English language usage, "Negro" generally is considered acceptable in a historical context or in the name of older organizations, as in the United Negro College Fund, and is used more commonly by those born before the post World War II baby boom."

I can't believe someone would be so totally stupid. I've heard rumours that people do make this pig-ignorant remark. For f--k's sake they are bloody black. What's the point of some fancy name that changes decade by decade and doesn't even apply to a British citizen?
