hi everyone!! counting days before the move in.. =) just a quick question to our senior members, how did you notify cra (do you need to fill up that exit tax etc?) and ohip when you left canada ... thanking you all in advance!

And to add to this list. I talked to AMA (my car insurer) and they are going to give me some sort of driver’s extract or letter to get me started down there.

I went this route instead of leaving it to chance for myself and my daughter. I 'think' they sent a letter of confirmation...it's been a while.

I have a question- what happens if you don't notify OHIP and simply let your card expire (obviously without using any OHIP services) I haven't notified OHIP because I'm lazy- can I get in trouble for that so long as I don't try to use it?

Also, make sure to notify the CRA that you are no longer eligible for GST and related credits (you cease being eligible for them when you POE). Make sure to call the federal CRA office (I think it's in Ottawa now?) for any federal tax credits and to change your residency, as provincial offices can't do that.

thanks to all...i've spoken with CRA and they told me to send them a letter that im moving to the states and that i may have to file a final tax return (im a permanent resident not a canadian citizen) now i more confuse...to be a non resident means severing ties like canadian bank accounts, drivers license, ohip.... tax issues are driving me nuts.. im not planning to give up my residency yet..please shed some light to those who went through all of these...

As soon as you become a resident of the U.S. you will no longer be a resident of Canada. For citizens we don't lose our citizenship but I would imagine that you can't be a PR of Canada while being a PR of the U.S. Your situation might need some more expert advice I'm curious to know.
