Saudi Arabia bride demands groom marry her friends

Dubai: A Saudi teacher has reportedly told the man who wanted to marry her that she had only one condition before accepting his proposal: He must marry her two friends at the school at the same time.

The would-be groom was shocked by her unexpected demand, but came under strong pressure from relatives and friends who eventually persuaded him to accept to marry the three women, Saudi daily Al Youm reported.

Under the deal, the bridegroom rented three apartments in the same building and lodged each of his brides in her own flat.

Polygamy is allowed in Saudi Arabia, and a man is entitled to take up to four wives, but must not differentiate between them and must treat them equally physically and emotionally and in regard to sustenance, expenditure, time and all obligations as a husband.

Good for her ! It's always best when the woman choses the other wives...

Marriage certainly is a different animal there - arranged marriages point to this as well. It seems to me that it is done not out of love but out of social-economic custom and/or necessity, and that is more the accepted norm than not. I wonder how prevalent cheating goes on there?

Is it ok to have group sex with all three wives? That might be interesting.

That was kind of what struck me. She wanted to bring a friend, but still needed to convince him. And then his relatives needed to convince him.

The sex arrangement isn't the difficult part. You seem to be forgetting having all the extra people to care for and pay for, and the added stress of maintaining plural marriages and multiple apartments.

You think men are that dumb that the promise of sex cancels out any real world considerations?

Well nevermind, I think your comment already answered that for me.

This seems like its gonna be fake marriage. Like the kind of chick that marries a guy just to be taken care of. Except this one has the skill to get him to take care of her two friends. That's skill.

You're not wrong. I see this story mostly for the comedic value. Obviously it's a complicated story that got reduced to a small blurb in a newspaper. The thing is, the situation is so ridiculous to me that it's mostly just a joke. It's not so much the plural marriage as the idea that after determining that he wanted to marry a woman, anybody would take the recommendation that he also marry her friends seriously. Unless one of them is a good cook and the other one is really hot. Then it makes perfect sense.

I still tend to agree with Harpa. They're probably lesbians. Or at the very least want this man as far out of the center of this equation as possible.

Also - just because a religion allows for something doesn't mean it's encouraged. Muslims aren't fundamentalist Mormons.

Yeah, lesbians. The one tells her suitor, "oh, yeah, we can marry, it's just... you have to marry my friends too. Because we are really close and we want to be together... as friends... yeah. We like each other and we really get along. We'd be good at being sister wives."

I have read that in school and societies that segregate the sexes a lot, many people who aren't otherwise gay or lesbian turn to gay and lesbian relationships so they can have some closeness with another person.

Yup which is why in small towns and villages in India you see a lot of men affectionately holding hands while they walk.
