Limah, Did you contact all of your congresspeople's offices? Sometimes one will be useless while another gets results quickly.

Enjoy your visit to Morocco. I wish we could go right now, but it's gonna be at least May before we can even think about it.

Abdel got to meet one of my classmates tonight and had a great conversation. The guy is from Peru, his father works in Rabat and he spent 4 months over there this year. He speaks fluent Arabic and French and Spanish in addition to English, so Abdel had a wonderful chat while I was in class. The guy works in the language lab, so they sat in there and looked at pictures from his trip to Morocco.

Now we're sitting in the Economics lab waiting for my appointment with the professor to go over my research. There is a poetry reading at 7 that we wanted to go to, but he's running behind schedule so it looks like we might miss it. The poet is Brigette Byrd and she'll be reading her own works. I wish the guy in front of me would shut up and finish so I can have my turn and we can get to the reading.

I wish I could see your smileys! They aren't coming through here at work.

The heater just kicked in here today for the first time this year, and boy does it stink! :protest: I had to look under my desk to make sure my space heater wasn't on fire.

OMG! One of my coworkers just came in and checked the thermostat in my office and told me it was 78 in here. I told her that was funny because since I turned off my heater it was cold under my desk. She said "I can't help what your p*ssy is doing!"

:lol::lol::lol::blush:

Honest to God, Walk like an Egyptian was my favorite song in elementary school. In junior high and high school, I always asked the DJ to play it, but they never seemed to have it with them. How they called themselves DJs without having A Different Light is beyond me

Esalam, Hello and Salut everyone

Woke up with a headache, sleepy all day...tried to call my local INS office about my case (and the admin errors that were made it in recently)...but got no where...made yet another appointment with INS...yea!

I finally got back into my Vj account..donnow what happened there. Said it was closed?!

My husband is telling he wants to get some hijama procedure done...and makes me abit worried for him. I donnot trust untrained people to preform this on my husband. He keeps telling me it will help him with his back, but I am worried. And then I nearly flipped out he wanted to get it done 3 times...ok ok it's Sunnah...but I worry and I prefer to be there if he has to get this done. I know there are some cowboys out there - well intentioned or not they can do damage. I have seen women with the scars from blotched up hijamas. :help:

Anywho my daughter had her pj day at her school...got to wear her pjs to school...she did very much enjoy that!

Turkey day soon...got out turkey and duck out, thawing...tomorrow I am salting it! Mmmm...

Have a blessed day everyone and Thanksgiving!

Cupping or bloodletting according to Wikipedia.

Allah tries his chosen people through many hardships, but those who persevere through adversity, surrendering themselves before the will of Allah, shall be blessed with a superb reward.

-The Prophet Muhammad (SAW), as reported by Anas bin Malik

A time will come when the sky is torn apart; when the stars scatter, and the ocean drains away; and when the graves are tossed about, and laid open. At that time every man will be told what he has done, and what he has failed to do; and every woman will be told what she has done, and what she has failed to do.

-Qur'an, Al-Infitar, Surah 82:1-5

Henia, what is hijama?

mm_hijama1.jpg

Well here is a picture I found. Sorry if you are a bit squeamish. Also after googling "hijama" this is what came up... so you know. I am trying to get my husband to forego this procedure least until I am with him. I donnot trust anyone touching my man!

Hijama (Arabic حجامة lit. “Sucking”) is a process often translated as either blood letting or cupping, although it is fundamentally different to both. Hijama involves extracting bad blood from the body by means of making small incisions and sucking.

Hijama is normally performed on the head, but can be performed anywhere on the body, often at the site of an ache or pain in order to ease or alleviate it.

Hijama is generally performed by Muslims as it is form of medicine specifically mentioned and encouraged by the prophet Muhammed (صلى الله عليه و سلم): It is mentioned in a hadith recorded by Al-Bukhaari (5263) and Muslim (2952) that “Hijama is among your best remedies” (خير ما تداويتم به الحجامة)

The site on the body chosen for Hijama is first shaved to ensure a tight seal with the cup. The mouth of a cup (metal, glass and plastic cups are generally used, although traditionally horns were used) is placed on the skin at the site chosen for cupping (alternatively leeches can be used). Then a tight seal is created, generally by burning a small piece of paper or cotton inside the vessel, so that the mouth of the cup clings to the skin. Alternatively a machine can be used instead of the method described above. The cup is left to cling to the skin for a few minutes, then it is lifted off and a couple of very small incisions are made in the skin, normally with a razor blade. The cup is then put back as it was before until it is filled with the bad blood that comes out of the veins. This blood is generally either black or very dark red, and is clearly distinguishable from the patient’s normal blood.

It is claimed by its supporters that hijamah can be used to treat circulatory diseases, blood pressure, chest diseases, headache, eye, rheumatic, and joint pain, as well as to improve memory - no double-blind randomised controlled trial has been conducted to test these claims. Hijamah should not be confused with the practice of venesection or blood-letting which was used to remove larger quantities of blood - Galen, Ibn-Sina (Avicenna) and Al-Zahrawi(Albucasis) advocated this for treatment of various diseases. William Harvey and Jan Baptista van Helmont disapproved of venesection. Pierre Charles Alexander Louis demonstrated that blood-letting did not benefit in pneumonia - a disease in which it was thought to be particularly beneficial. Try as hard as you can, Henia! That looks horrible (I apologize if this is insensitive to the cultural norms in Algeria).

 bloodletting? whatever for?

*scurries off to read Wikipedia

They say you feel the benefit of having it done, even if having it done the once, Our Prophet ( sallallahu alaihi wa salam ) had it done many time, it takes all the bad blood from your system, so that fresh cell can grow.

You don't feel anything except a little scratch, you don't even feel the flame cos as soon as the cup goes on the flame goes out, the flame is just to remove oxygen, so that the cup can form a sucktion thats all. its sunah to have Hijamadone.

And as for hygine well they do is use anti septic wipe before and after, so does not seem too sterile to me. They say you only end up with little scratch mark nothing more, but I have very bad scars too.

I just worry for my husband...

Yes Jenn! I am trying to talk him out of it, or at least wait until I am there to supervise this!

But they actually do it all over MENA, not only in Algerie...and I have seen several Hijama (1 day) teaching sessions in the UK...sorry but someone who got "trained" to do this in a day is not touching me or my husband!

Henia, you're supposed to be back with him in just a month or so right? Insha'Allah you'll be able to convince him to wait that short amount of time til you're back with him.

Also, can you go with him and be there when he has it done?

Back in those day if they were given the choice between this and Tylenol, what do you think they would pick? :P

it's an ancient oriental practice that I actually studied a bit while learning traditional oriental medicine. I did a little "cupping" (as I learned it by name), but it's not something I practice regularly or have done in a very long time. It's supposed to be quite beneficial. My teacher did it quite a bit.
