If there were competent black lawyers, they would surely be arguing in front of the SC. It seems there aren't any.

Unfortunately, over the past few decades, minorities can no longer use the excuse that they don't get the same opportunities. But bless their little hearts they still try to use that excuse. Maybe in 1950 or 60's it was true, but in the past 20 years any person black, white, yellow, green, and purple can go to ANY university they want to. So the new excuse seems to be that minorities still don't get the same opportunities to attend good schools (or play hockey according to a previous poster rofl.gif ) because they can't afford them. That's not racism or discrimination. That's called economics. Hell, I wanted to attend a top university as an undergrad, but I could not afford the tuition. So I went to a lower level university and am a very successful financial services manager on Wall Street. I didn't call it discrimination and I didn't expect the gov't to pay my bills for me.

Bottom line: If somebody is a hard worker and is persistent, they can achieve good things; no need for excuses.

So I see you're just going to ignore the racist undertones of the economics of this country. Cool, dude. Enjoy your white male privilege. You've earned it good.gif

This is a good read for you. The article the patriot posted, I didn't see anyone whining about not being able to become a lawyer. And no one is using excuses in the article, they were making an observation. Don't paint all black people in the same box.

When talking about top level professionals such as elite lawyers, top level executives, etc. remember that most of those people are older and have several decades of experience. I doubt strongly you have many 23 year old recent law school grads arguing before the Supreme Court. This disparity we're talking about is not about opportunities today. It's about opportunities 30, 40 and 50 years ago. Graduates from elite schools today are more diverse and are actually majority female. I may be wrong, but I expect that 30-50 years from now, you'll see a much different crowd arguing before the Supreme Court.

Don't assume that a disparity in the top echelons today reflects a disparity of opportunity today. The NBA and NFL are naturally quicker to adjust because their stars are 23 year old recent grads.

Interesting article. I would point out that I have been stopped and asked for ID on at least 4 occasions that I can think of (two of them in the US). Does that mean I look black?

When you've been stopped, do they ask you is this your car? Or how about are you in a gang? Do they ask to search your vehicle? Or do they ask what are you doing in this neighborhood?

Never been stopped while in a car (always on foot). Never been asked about being in a gang. I can remember at least 3 of those instances I was asked what I was doing (not specifically in the neighborhood, but I don't see that as making a difference).

You don't see the difference because it's racist towards minorities. It's the line of thinking that says we can't have nice things if we aren't selling drugs, that's all we are capable of. If we are in a nice neighborhood, we can't live there, we must be up to no good.

I remember back in the 90's when pagers were all the rage. I had one because having a job working construction required me to be on call and meet my uncle/boss at different placed and I could afford it. But if you were black and had one, you were selling drugs automatically. Even if I was walking in the mall with it on my hip, pants up and dressed like a normal person, I'd get stopped and asked if I was selling drugs.

No matter how hard you try to defy stereotypes, there are too many folks willing to paint you in that same box.
