In entire court term, justices see 1 black lawyer

WASHINGTON (AP) In roughly 75 hours of arguments at the Supreme Court since October, only one African-American lawyer appeared before the justices, and for just over 11 minutes.

The numbers were marginally better for Hispanic lawyers. Four of them argued for a total of 1 hour, 45 minutes.

Women were better represented, accounting for just over 17 percent of the arguments before the justices.

In an era when three women, a Hispanic and an African-American sit on the court and white men constitute a bare majority of the nine justices, the court is more diverse than the lawyers who argue before it.

The arguments that took place from October to April were presented overwhelmingly by white men. Women and minority lawyers whose clients' cases were heard by the court were far more likely to represent governments or be part of public-interest law firms than in private practice, where paychecks are much larger.

The numbers generally reflect the largely white and male upper reaches of the biggest and richest private law firms, where there have been small gains by women and minorities in the past 20 years. A recent survey by the Association for Legal Career Professionals found that more than 93 percent of partners in law firms are white and nearly 80 percent are men.

You didn't even address the problem here. You can't argue that racism doesn't exist by saying "but look at these two cases where whites are not the majority!11!!!".

Also, it's not racist that the percentages are like that. Both organizations are rare cases where minorities have found great success. The NFL used to be primarily white. The NBA used to be more white (go back to the 1970s and take a look). Both organizations rely on athletic ability and have long ago passed anti-discriminatory regulations that have allowed for people of color to participate and, in both cases, dominate. Bear in mind the other factors involved in this. Basketball is regarded as an inner-city, low-cost, sport - which allows more people, particularly minorities who find themselves in such economic and social demographics, to participate. You'll see more people of color in basketball, for example, than in ice hockey - a sport that requires a specific arena, space and a lot of money.

It is not racist that the demographics of the NBA and NFL are like that - but it does reflect racist problems in societies like economic disparity between people of color and whites.

Ok let me get this straight. In these situations blacks succeeded because they worked harder and were more talented so the best person got the jobs. everywhere they don't dominate it's because of racism. Got it .

OK I have no idea what you're reading to have jumped, skipped, climbed and swam to that conclusion.

If there were competent black lawyers, they would surely be arguing in front of the SC. It seems there aren't any.

Unfortunately, over the past few decades, minorities can no longer use the excuse that they don't get the same opportunities. But bless their little hearts they still try to use that excuse. Maybe in 1950 or 60's it was true, but in the past 20 years any person black, white, yellow, green, and purple can go to ANY university they want to. So the new excuse seems to be that minorities still don't get the same opportunities to attend good schools (or play hockey according to a previous poster ) because they can't afford them. That's not racism or discrimination. That's called economics. Hell, I wanted to attend a top university as an undergrad, but I could not afford the tuition. So I went to a lower level university and am a very successful financial services manager on Wall Street. I didn't call it discrimination and I didn't expect the gov't to pay my bills for me.

Bottom line: If somebody is a hard worker and is persistent, they can achieve good things; no need for excuses.
