I have always been the one to say that we would be together before a year was up, but I'm starting to loose hope for that. At least I get to go to Ukraine for the first two weeks of December. We have a trip to the embassy planned, so we can get her passport copy certified, ITIN/taxes and all that, since I'm certain she won't be here before April 15 now.

I'd be happy if our file had even been touched since it landed it whatever box it currently resides in, back in May.

You can get passport copies certified and ITINs at the embassy?? How? If so, that's great news because I don't want to have to get my wife's ITIN over here in the states. Please let me know.

The Kiev embassy says they can certify the copy of her passport, thats acceptable to the IRS. Otherwise you would need to submit the original passport, with your return. You still have to submit her W-7, with your tax return for this year. The IRS will issue the ITIN when you file. At least thats the way my accountant explained it to me.

I just sent the US citizen services branch an email about what we needed. They said to schedule an appointment on their website. I plan to just schedule an appointment for "notary services". When I asked about certifying the passport copy for the ITIN, they knew exactly what I was talking about. In Kiev, at least (I'd bet it's the same world wide) there is a $50 fee, for the service.

ITIN is an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. It's used in lieu of an SSN, under certain circumstances. For example, filing joint taxes, when your spouse isn't yet a resident. She will need to fill out a W-7, and provide some documentation with your 2013 tax return. You should consult a tax professional for the best advise on what you need to do.

The way it's been explained to me, is that the US Consulate, in the country that issued the passport, can certify a copy of the passport, and that's acceptable to the IRS. See the link in my post above, the instructions for the W-7. It seems to support that. I have seen a least one other thread here on VJ, and the USC said they did the same thing, had a copy of passport certified at the US embassy.

I hope the information I got is correct. There is no way we are sending her original passport to the IRS.

I just saw eight March filers approved on the 21st, so all in just one day, which is awesome news.

I feel like a lot of people are very negative here. I do miss my husband a lot and can't wait to move, BUT I'm also pretty sure USCIS is doing their job and it doesn't change anything complaining the entire time. I haven't even called them once, because I believe that whenever my case is ready to move on they will let me know.

Since they seem to approve a lot of February and March I would give us May filers 2-3 more months for normal processing time and normal cases. Stay strong and PLEASEEEE be positive wink.png

Lots of negative people here. Even with news of transfers and approvals people still find something to be negative about. Guess it's just one of the realities of the community here.

I agree with you though - let's stay strong and be positive!
