GOP Sen. Inhofe: Obama could be impeached over Benghazi

Inhofe, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said in an interview Thursday with the “Rusty Humphries Show” that impeachment would become an issue soon over the “greatest cover-up in American history.”

“Of all the great cover-ups in history — the Pentagon papers, Iran-Contra, Watergate, all the rest of them — this … is going to go down as most egregious cover-up in American history,” Inhofe said.

When Humphries suggested that the Democratic-controlled Senate would not impeach the president, Inhofe said that was true. He said that Benghazi would "endure" and impeachment could come after the 2014 mid-term elections, when Republicans hope to retake control of the upper chamber.

I doubt anything will ever be bigger and more egregious than Watergate, but Inhofe is entitled to his Kool-Aid. Interesting he should not include the 2000 presidential elections in the bag of 'most egregious cover-up' in American history...

I don't think so. The Amnesty that they are about to pass will turn off most of the voters that came out for them in 2010. There are just too many issues where the Republicans stand on one side of the aisle and most of America stands on the other. It's getting worse and they know they have a problem. They can't stand with America because then their hard base will primary them and replace them with candidates that can't win a general election. But they also can't stand with their hard base because then they become the candidate that can't win the general election. There are only so many angry white men in this country. And they're dying faster than they can replenish their ranks.

I can't see Obama impeached over the cover-up. The only way to sell an impeachment would be to claim that Obama intentionally let Stevens et. all die. Without some concrete evidence of that, it will go nowhere.

Even then, conviction by the Senate during an impeachment hearing requires a 2/3 majority, if I remember correctly. (That's the only reason that Clinton remained in office as Republicans controlled the house and Senate at that point). Things won't go that well for the Republicans in 2014, no matter what happens. If the story against Obama was outrageous enough and solid enough, you could get some Democrats to go against him, but we're quite a ways away from that.
