my youngest sister is an 8th grader...and the only muslim student in her class....her English teacher stated after the bombings of the twin towers and the bombing in Boston his personal opinion is that all muslims should be rounded up and put into concentration camps......when we asked her how that even came up in english class she stated that a student asked him what he thought of muslims........we understand that many people have strong feelings about muslims and thats ok but isnt this something that should be kept silent about when in a class room full of impressionable teenagers?

That was totally wrong on so many levels. He should be fired.

Sara, weren't you raised in America? Shouldn't you know this? I don't mean offense... but I would hope that you can see it would be wrong if the teacher made the same comment about anyone else. If he said all Japanese should be in concentration camps or all Mexicans, or anyone, I would hope you would also be outraged.

Regarding free speech, he won't go to jail for this, no, so that is how he is protected. But he could be fired. He is in a position of authority teaching kids. It would be inappropriate to relay his sex life to those kids, or to talk about how fun using drugs is, or to say that women aren't fit for work, you see?

you need to have a meeting with the teacher to air your concerns.. (have the principle there also, if you want)

if you are really upset by this.. straight to the principle

then superintendent..

then school board..

thats kind of the order, if you don't like what you hear.. go up the line..

Sara has shown compassion on this board numerous times. And anyone with a shred of deceny would be outraged. It's discrimination, doens't matter what race or religion is involved.

sadly the teacher did state after he said that ........that he was covered by the right to free speech after a student asked him if he thought that was a little harsh and wouldnt it make problems for him guess we will see this morning how the school feels about it.......

Yes, I know, that is my point.

Ahh, I see. Well no that is not okay and not "covered by free speech" (except in the sense that he won't go to jail). I wouldn't try to reason with a teacher like that, I'd go straight to the principal. Good luck.

i don't think the teacher discriminated, he was asked his opinion and he gave it in an immature and ignorant manner - especially for a teacher. a responsible adult entrusted to guide children should know better than to let fear and emotion dictate his ability to reason.

Ew, no that's not okay. He's a moron, and shouldn't be a classroom with students. This from an ex-teacher. He will not be protected by the 1st amendment for this.

What an idiot. Get him out of the classroom.
