What do your husbands do for work when they arrive to USA?

I can say that I'm not looking forward to this process.

My husband is a full time student, so he is not working yet, but his undergraduate degree is in Linguistics and English, so it's not exactly job-market friendly. He's now decided that he's interested in the trades (welding, electricity, carpentry, plumbing...) so he is seeking a degree that encompasses them. Hopefully, he will find work when he's done.

I have one more year of an MBA, and then I'll be in the job market, too. Big fun...

My husband is working retail. Started off just unloading truck at one place and got a floor job at a former employer of mine. He's trained as an art teacher, but we all know how strict teaching requirements are here. He's also going to Community College to learn CNC Machining, which is a much more useful and lucrative career here in the US than getting his teaching cert.

Its frustrating for him to be working for such a low wage, but he's happy to have the opportunity to study something that he's interested in, as he was just assigned to a subject in Syria. Gotta stay positive!

Alhamdulilah we are very fortunate and he works with my dad who owns a few businesses. But i would say depending on if he has a degree (or a transferrable one) maybe try to find work in his area of expertise. If not usually labor jobs. I know it sucks, but it is the way life works. My husband didnt go to school overseas, and he just decided that he wants to go to college! we are very happy for that! just keep calm it takes alot of patience and hard work but eventually it will all work out just have some faith and be sure to encourage him every day. Moving to a new country can leave someone to feel very helpless, even though he has you as a support system it is very hard not to have family around. When the time comes you just have to work with what you get and hope and pray things get better. I dont give a ####### about how bad the economy is... because i personally believe that if you are hard working no matter what happens you can make a living. He has one advantage, I have noticed that the men from america are actually kind of lazy... the men from overseas are used to working 80 hour weeks... so in a sense it does give them a sort of advantage! good luck!

This is a bit more directed towards Moroccan husbands, since they come from a country where many people speak 3-4 languages fluently, but I would be eager to hear the experience of anyone.

Has speaking multiple languages helped your husbands at all in the job market? When the time comes, I'm hoping that Younes' command of French, Arabic and most importantly, Spanish, will help give him a boost-it's the one thing that really sets him aside from American competition. But maybe I'm just being overly optimistic.

Yep, alllll the poors got that way and stay that way because of their own damn laziness and refusal to "work hard". Because of American refusal to work 80 hour work weeks that all the guys "working overseas" are already doing. Brilliant, just brilliant.

So I am guessing you've never had to support yourself ever. Good for you. Most people aren't nearly so lucky, entitled, and ignorant. When I was laid off from my old job I was at the point of taking to the streets screaming my effing lungs out. Only reason I found a new job was my new boss owed my dad a big favor. If you don't have connections in this life, you don't go anywhere fast. Period.

Get a clue girlie: Our country's economic and political regime of race to the bottom and the 1%/99% dichotomy is the problem - not the workers who dare to complain about 80 hour work weeks and no benefits or security.
