Assuming you have a tourist via, you can visit when he files or anytime after. It is best if he files the I-130 for you and your son together- of course, if he i a US citizen and the son is his, the son may be a US citizen by birth and would need a passport, not a visa.

Yes you can travel. My wife travels to the US twice a year and I go to Trinidad twice a year. and we never had any issues. Most they have ever asked her was how we met.She told them that I was trying so hard to get her attention at a function that she figured it was worth a shot to talk to me. The immigration officer had a good chuckle an just told her to enjoy her stay.lol

Oct 1st 2012 - Mailed I-130 package to Phoenix

Jan 31st 2013 -Emailed ncsc-customerconnect@uscis.dhs.gov
Feb 6th 2013 - Response that my case was tranferred to the local Jacksonville field office on Nov 19th 2012
Apr 2nd 2013 - Infopass. Found out that there was an RFE dated Dec 19th that I never received.USCIS website never reflected that either.Got a copy of the RFE .Time to make another infopass to drop documents off at local Jacksonville office.
