Hello,

I am a physician currently on J1 clinical visa and I applied for fellowship. However, due to personal reasons I will have to go back to my country to attend to my family. I estimate this will take a year.

My fellowship program understands my personal issues and they informed me they will hold the position for next year.

My questions are:

Once I rescind my application for continuation of J1 sponsorship through ECFMG, can I come back after a year under J1 clinical visa for fellowship or do I have to wait for 2 continuous years (home residency requirement)?

If I am able to come back after just one year, does that year count for my home residency requirement?

Thanks.
