Why do I have to call the NVC for case number after NOA2?

Just wondering why this step is needed? I just received my NOA2 (finally!) and we are actually in no hurry to get a head start on the next forms because my fiancee is already here visiting me for the next month. So the question is: will I receive my case number without having to to call or email the NVC? And will packet 3 be automatically sent to her house in Italy or will I need to call the embassy to check up on it? Thanks very much!

Maybe Embassy info will be helpful http://www.visajourney.com/consulates/index.php?ctry=Italy&cty=Naples

If you're not in a hurry then I gather you can skip this point.

You do not need to call for the case number. It is recommended to help move along your process but it is not needed. The NVC will mail you a hard copy with your case number, and it will automatically be sent to the embassy. The embassy should be mailing something when they have the approved petition.
