Any advice to get into addiction treatment?

I have 15 years experience clinical and management, residential and out patient. In NZ a degree is sufficient and it seems to get licensed I need a Masters..

Seems like I have to decide to study straight away at full cost of a Masters....

Wait and live in Oregon a year and then start a Masters with reduced cost...

Give up the career I had, stress less .. apply at Costco... or WalMart....

Your input appreciated...

Thanks in advance...

Do what you love, if working in addictions is what you love, do whatever it takes! If Costco and Walmart will make you happy, then folllow that dream

If addictions is your calling then think of all the people's lives' you have the opportunity to touch

good luck

What kind of work in addictions?

Depends what state too. I have my addictions counselling certification from Canada. Here in California, they don't recognize my training, so I have to get certified with the state to be an A&D counsellor. Which means i have to do my schooling all over again, plus non paid internship for 6 months. Doesn't help the schooling is pretty expensive here too. I have my BA. If I went onto get my MA, I'd still have to do that addictions training again if I wanted to do counselling.

Sorry guys.. awkwardsoul and littlej.. I have been not attending to the email alerts so have missed these.

I've decided to wait until I'm there and visit schools etc in person. At my age I really dont want to retrain.. but give me a few months and I may have a renewed energy.

I work as the Operations and Clinical Manager for a residential and day programme for AOD, and out patient for AOD and problem gambling.

to do any counseling work, ya gotta have the cert.

to do any admin work inside of an addiction center, you don't need the cert.

bear that in mind as you are picking out your choice of path.
