I feel pretty bad for a lot of the guys at our plant. Some have been working 7 days a week for months on end with no end in sight. I think some have reached a point where something like this would help them spend some time at home. I don't know enough about the bill to say if it would help them but something to help people like that without going over board would be nice.

Sure, if it is a choice and if the time off for overtime worked is 1.5 hours of time off for every overtime hour worked. Then it makes sense. But that's not on the table and it is really not practical. I know enough people that don;t know when to take their vacation days. Now add days of time off for overtime worked. When are they going to take those? Bottom line, if businesses have people work a lot of overtime, it means they're understaffed. Compensating with pay for that extra time keeps overtime at a minimum. Because when people start taking time off instead of taking the extra money, who is doing the work that these employees would otherwise have done? Right, those that are not taking off. By working more overtime than they otherwise would have been required to. And on it goes.

In our plant, our maint guys expect and plan on overtime pay. Which is fine as long as they don't mind it and the mgmt is ok with paying it. So in most cases it is a symbiotic relationship. We have trouble finding people in our area with real high tech maintenance experience. Most people in the auto field live up north, especially Michigan and they don't want to move. The ones around here that have experience usually burn out and take a job at a place with less overtime. Western ky has a very limited skilled trades market when it comes to tool and die or robotics.

You can't really blame skilled folk for not wanting to live in Western KY, can you?

Me? No. I'm a liberal. I expect to get paid to do absolutely nothing.

My bad. I guess I wasn't paying attention either.

Yes and no. Property here is like a dollar and you can really do what you want here with the wages plants like ours pay. Better than being unemployed in Michigan.

It can be pretty lame at times for sure. But I guess it all depends on what you want out of where you live. A lot warmer for sure.

If property is a dollar I can afford three properties there, maybe even four! That sounds aweso....... that sounds like a lot of work.

Property is a dollar for a reason. I know what you mean - I lived a couple hours south from there in middle TN for a decade.

I'm in a rough spot at the moment. I'm a project manager in a smallish firm. I work 45+ hrs and get 5 days vacation and 4 days sick pay no overtime. A gentleman who works for me had logged plenty of late hours helping me this year (probably 30+). He caught pneumonia one week and missed 5 days so they deducted a day's pay.

I wish we had UK like employee protections.

5 vacation days in an exempt position? You're damn right you're in a rough spot. As a project manager, you should be able to do better for yourself.

so would the employee decide if they want the comp time or OT pay? or does the employer decide how to administer this policy.??? Also, what happens to the comp time if the employee leaves the company.???

Most places I have worked, when you leave, they pay you for unused vacation time, but not for unused/accrued sick time...

This bill just looks like it gives the employer another way to screw the employee...

It's a Republican bill. Not likely it is meant to improve the situation for workers.

I would prefer to take the overtime pay myself. When I did factory work in Canada, we had mandated Saturday overtime for almost 9 months straight (lowest seniority got scheduled unless someone signed up for the position you would have been mandated for). Since I was in the lower end of senority, I just signed up for positions I preferred, which were usually the higher paying jobs. I could go home making $250-$350 in that one day of overtime (if I was asked to work a 12 hour shift, of course I would take it). I made a lot of extra money in those 9 months. With the threat of layoffs (which ended up happening as we progressed into automation at my factory, and I know many other factories and other sectors have layoff concerns), I preferred to have that cash in my account, rather than have days off in lieu.

In an industry like the one I'm in, this isn't even applicable. Standard hours are 12 hour days, 6 days a week for each project. If we're on a project that allows overtime, hours 12-14 are time an a half, 14-16 are double time, and 16 to 20 is golden hour (a day's pay per hour). At 20 hours we have to abandon set and are required a 10 over turn around.

As I mostly work above the line, overtime is completely nonexistent. I just loathe to factor it into the budget before, during and after.

I am the USC/petitioner.

I watched the vote on this, on c-span.

Very chilling, at least to me.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
