Thanks to Taliban, polio returns to North Waziristan

how many welsh drs have attempted to collect DNA samples from welsh children with zero consent, under the guise of a false vaccine program that left children vulnerable to a deadly disease, but led to believe they were protected?

both countries are experiencing public health crises. but the callousness of the responses when it comes to dead or maimed pakistani kids coming down with polio would never, ever be heaped upon the welsh or their children. not in a million years. somehow the ignorance and superstition that has led to the crisis in the UK is magically different than that of pakistan's. literate welsh not living in war zones get passes pakistanis in north waziristan never will.

Two wrongs do not make a right. One does not get to suggest one thing is not bad by pointing at someone else and saying "They're doing it too". My parents didn't let me get away with it and I bet yours didn't either.

If this disease had been truly eradicated then this child wouldn't have gotten polio. Just like measles wasn't truly eradicated in the US and Europe where there has been a resurgence. So it's stupid to say it was eradicated. FYI children die [or are debilitated] in those regions of many other diseases because, frankly, it's a poor and underdeveloped part of the world. In Central Africa and Bangladesh children die from diarrhea, which to me, is more sad and pathetic.

What the Taliban is doing to Pakistan and Afghanistan is inhumane and despicable on so many levels that targeting public health measures is only a very small part of it, though it is a juicy headline. We also terrorize that part of the world with drones, so those people are getting it from all sides. No one is defending the Taliban and their ways. For me, they are more like cancer than people. Though I do have to agree with sandinista about medical ethics. It's a slippery slope. Doctors, drugs, and health programs getting bad press or scandals can lead to a lot of people simply deciding not to seek medical treatment, which is a bad thing. Look at the misinformation campaigns that South African politicians went on in order to get out of paying for ARVs for their HIV-infected population. So many Southern Africans believe ARVs are poison. Mixing politics and health usually produces bad results.

On a different note, the resurgence of measles and other "eradicated" diseases in the US and Europe is all due to moronic parents refusing to vaccinate their kids because of their moronic superstitions. If you have unfettered access to vaccines and you don't vaccinate your kids then you are a bad parent. Period.

ironic. there is a rather significant following of fundie christians who do not vaccinate their children because secular medicine is basically obama and obama = muslim.

sadly, these are generally the same crazy fundies who do not believe in birth control and have a ridiculous number of children.

Yes. You are correct. Now perhaps we should delve further into what some might quantify as "moronic superstitions" and then expand the discussion to a world scope.

Not all the vaccinaphobes are Christian. Quite a lot of them are of the hippie, all natural, nature loving variety. See: Jenny McCarthy. To this day she still she's still spouting off that the MMR vaccine causes autism, despite all the evidence to the contrary. It defies all logic when a playboy bunny is considered a more reliable source for health information than physicians associations and the Department of Health. She was mostly up in arms about one vaccine, when many of the anti-MMR crowd are opposed to all vaccines for children. Damn idiots living off our herd immunity.

You're almost there. Now say "People who deny immunization of their children for any superstition, whether it be religious, naturalists, tin foil theories of govt control, etc, are risking their children's lives, endangering the procurement of the species, and should be wholly condemned"

good.gifYes. Shame it's only the children who suffer and not their parents.

yeah i know vaccinaphobes come in all sorts of flavors - i find it ironic that the fundie no vaccine moms i know (they're my cousins) have such a similar thought process as the taliban..

There's a big difference between being against vaccinations, and killing the people that offer them.

considering they believe vaccinations are the work of the devil - i expect attempts in the future. they want abortion doctors dead, this would be the next group on their sh*t list.

Nice try. Your blind faith of a certain religion has apparently interfered with your ability to use logic. Seems to happen a lot with that religion for some reason when a point is trying to be made. Not sure why.

####### flinging because you can't discuss what's actually going on-awesome.

Public health officials in Wales are pulling out all stops to get this outbreak under control and do their best to protect the children and youth in the area. What is the Taliban doing in response to polio resurfacing following the halt of the vaccination program due to their murderous campaign against the program and those that administered it? Are kids now vaccinated against polio there? Yeah, I didn't think so. Give me a break with that nonsense!

Yeah, duh, no one has cited the Taliban as doing anything but causing death and mayhem here.

Regardless of what Welsh public health response has been, it is nevertheless stupidity, ignorance, and superstition at a large enough scale in the general public that got them to this point. That's all I was pointing out. And the fact that there were so many stupid, ignorant, and superstitious people there, even though there's never ever been a violation of their human rights under the guise of phony medical care like there recently was in Pakistan is even further testament to how ridiculous the situation is the UK has gotten itself into recently. That's all.

You're right, it totally doesn't. And no one, least of all me, has said it does. While this is a great sentiment, what does it have to do with anything I've actually said here? Specifically, what?

I'm far from the only one denouncing the ####### the CIA pulled with this fake vaccine program, and pointing out the consequences it's had. Here's 12 deans from the top public health universities in the country doing just the same. None of which means public health officials need your kindergarten lesson about two wrongs, or that America's top public health educators are worthless because of their " blind faith of a certain religion [that] has apparently interfered with [their] ability to use logic. Seems to happen a lot with that religion for some reason when a point is trying to be made. Not sure why." as Karee would say.

It's really simple what's going on here. Some religious nuts that happen to be Islamists are stopping children from getting vaccinated. No ####### flinging at all. It's a simple fact. Sorry if you don't like facts. The only thing you have offered as a response is some oddball thing about Wales, which is totally off topic.

There's a big difference between denouncing the horrificness of murdering vaccine workers, and heaping ####### and derision on all Pakistanis, just for being Pakistani, even if they have nothing to do with said murders of anyone.
