No, they are pronounced differently. The length of the s is different, at least in California.

I'm from California, and this is blowing my mind. There has never, to me, been any difference between x and ks/cks, so I would very much like to confirm here... Do Tacks and Tax sound different to you too? Lacks and lax? Locks and lox?

Are you saying that there is a different pronunciation between aks and axe? Note that the k is before the s here, because I'm going with the ebonics pronunciation.

If you are saying there is a difference between ask and axe, I get it, but...

If you are saying that ks and x are different, I don't get it at all. To me aks (short a, k-s consonant blend) sounds the same as axe (short a, k-s consonant blend).

In Woonsocket, RI, the French Canadians say axed instead of asked. And also boat, instead of both. And instead of side by side, they say side by each. Example: I axed him, and he said that boat cars were parked in the driveway, side by each.
