Hi I know this has nothing to do with visas but what would people recommond for networks for mobiles to use in America ?? I dont want to go contract right away so was looking at pre pay.

I suggest Tmobile they are a no contract company and they have good service. For just 50 dollars a month you have unlimited calling,text,picture text and unlimited internet with 500mb. Its pretty good.

I was looking at one called RED POCKET dont know if anybody has heard of it ?? It runs on the AT&T network and offers international calling to at 10c a min to the UK land line and Mobile

In general, mobile phones in the US are a complete rip-off compared to the UK. I was astonished when I found out how much my phone was going to cost with T-Mobile, who my wife was already using, then I shopped around and realised I couldn't do much better elsewhere. Pre-pay can be better deals, but are still not great.

One of the main things to worry about is network coverage. You can check your local area on the web pages for each of the main phone companies.

The pre-pay companies are sometimes national and sometimes pretty localised. You may find most people here haven't heard of some of them, so your best bet may be consumer reviews elsewhere.

My husband still uses pay as you go T-Mobile after 4.5 years here.

Not familiar with Red Pocket. We use Vonage for unlimited calling to UK. It's from the landline, but there's some magic to make the mobile an "extension" so you can call UK from the mobile via the Vonage. Don't even use that very often, but it's an option.

I have vonage over here and a virtual number so Nat can call me free of charge, is that an opition over there too ?? get a virtual number back in the UK ?

Ive been with Virgin Mobile in the US for 10 years and not a single complaint.

I've had both Verizon and AT&T for substantial time periods (and Sprint aaaages ago when it was even worse than it is now). I find Verizon is the most reliable in regards to service and they are better with alerting me if I'm about to go over my data usage. They are also easier to deal with in regards to customer service and upgrades. AT&T was reliable in terms of coverage, but were much sneakier about hidden fees and never let me know when I went over my limit.

my husband uses Boost Mobile.. you start off at $55 a month for Android unlimited everything and every 6 months that you pay they knock it down by $5 until you reach $40

he has no complaints with the service...

I didn't answer earlier, but yes you can. For some reason we have UK Vonage so his people can call us easily by dialing a UK number. But we also have US Vonage. So I finally remembered to ask why.

Yes a virtual number would do the same thing. But....he wants his UK number to simultaneous ring his mobile phone because he has kids and want to always be available. (Simul-ring is a Vonage feature.) So if it was a virtual number, every call to our house would ring his mobile, which he doesn't want.
